Nook or Kindle

So my students all gave to the class gift and my room parent got me a Nook.  Just the basic one and then a pink cover to go with it.  She mentioned how she'd give me the gift receipt if I wanted to use it towards upgrading to the fancier one.  Cause if I am going to have one I'd want the nice one with the apps and whatnot.  But I was looking up reviews and most people seem to prefer the Kindle Fire.  So now I am wondering if I could possibly have her exchange it for the Kindle.  Plus the Kindle is about $50 cheaper for the higher end model.  Just wondering what others have experienced!  TIA!

Re: Nook or Kindle

  • I have the regular Kindle so no fancy e-reader here recs here. I just wanted to say that is a really nice gift from the class, awesome!

  • Great gift!

I love my Nook Simple Touch. I also have the Nook Color which I rooted to make it like a tablet. I love both of them, but IMO they have different purposes. I didn't enjoy reading on the NC as much as the Nook or the Ipad ( so its not the back lit screen) but its great for games, email and for LO to read his books. I carry my nook everywhere and its nice and light. Reading on the Nook Color for long periods of time ( I was reading all the time after surgery) was odd for me compared to the ipad and other nooks.

I choose the the Nook over the kindle because I liked that the nook used epub to Kindle .mobi files. Even though the kindle files are easily converted, I like being able  to modify my gadgets. You can modify the Kindle but I think the new update makes it harder to root.

I will say Amazon has a much better interface than BN and the books are usually cheaper for the kindle. To combat that, I rooted both nooks so that I can have the kindle app on them.

In the end I think it comes down to personal preferance. Despite by unyeilding love for amazon.com, I just liked the nook more.  Some people are the opposite.

I say go and play with both of them and base it off that. LO loves my NC BEtween his Thomas the train books and "the bird game" ( angry birds) he usually hogs it  the only time I really enjoy it is when he is sleep.

Didn't mean to make this a novel- but I struggled with the choice and it was helpful to have the info.

  • I have heard the Kindle Fire is not good as an e-reader because of the back-lit screen. I would go to best buy and play with them and see what you prefer. Back lit screen vs true ink (or whatever it's called) and keyboard vs touchscreen.
