Speaking of Spoiled Christmas...

They said on the Today show this morning that the average family will spend $271 per kid for Christmas this year and implied that at that amount, kids were spoiled.   I didn't think that sounded high or spoiled until I added up what I spent this year on the four presents and all the stocking stuffer N is getting. ( I didn't count the duvet cover and comforter for N's new room that I wrapped only so he'd have something else to open and aren't really a Christmas gift.) I thought I had gone a little  nuts but I guess not, by comparison.

(keep in mind this is only what you & DH/SO spent, not everything they will get.)

Re: Speaking of Spoiled Christmas...

  • Ash is getting spoiled a LOT this year. I shop year round, which this year was a huge blessing since we are both out of work. 95% of her gifts were purchased prior to me losing my job. In total we spend ~$260 on her gifts, but two of them are pretty big (an anywhere chair and a table & chairs for the kitchen) and account for $160 of that. Everything else is books, blocks, and a few little toys. It's way too much, but I'm excited that she's going to have a great Christmas since everything else in our lives is pretty freaking hard right now (and for once, DH isn't making fun of me for buying Christmas gifts in March!).

  • I didn't spend much this year due to getting good deals and the fact that the child doesn't need much of anything and that her grandparents go overboard. I suspect as she gets older we will spend more since the items will start costing more.
  • Also, $271 seems low for being spoiled....I mean seriously if you buy your kid say an IPOD touch there is that amount almost right there. Spoil I guess to me means a ton of stuff not necessarily the amount you spent...
  • N's big gift is usually over $100 but I had a 20% off coupon plus used my frequent shopper points at Timbuk Toys to bring it down to $75.  Another I got for 20% off elsewhere for about $25 and the other two were only $10 & $12.  I probably spent $40-$50 on stocking stuffers though, thanks to all the single package Lego  characters I got, in lieu of one big Lego set. It felt like I was spending much more than what I actually did, for some reason.

That's what I was thinking.  If you buy your kid a bike or a playhouse for the big gift, that's going to raise the total number on that one thing alone.

  • I don't feel like we spent too much, though he is only 2. When he wants a gaming system, a fancy bike, skate board, stereo system or something else when he's older, I see it quickly approaching that number.

as PP said, major purchases add up fast (even clothes for girls would add up fast).

  • I havn't exactly added up what we spent on G but i would guess around $300. Her santa gift this year is a play kitchen that was almost $140 and didn't come with any food. We spent another $45 just on play food. Plus the stuff we got her and all of her stocking stuffers. I don't think $270 is a lot. You could easily sink a fourth of that into a stocking.

  • Probably around $100-150. That includes some seriously non-fun things though. All the kids got clothes which took up a pretty good chunk of that. I also got stuff like new tooth brushes, bath soap, diaper cream, etc for their stockings. I probably spent around $50 on toys and books, if that.
  • Well, we look low, but since today is DDs birthday, she'll get more this week.

The truth of the matter is when we add up what she's getting from all the family - grandparents, doting aunts, cousins who like buying for 3 year olds - we are looking at a thousand dollars.

Yeah, extreme, but that includes some typical 3 year old stuff like a bike and a helmet, and then a doll house, add the accessories, and some clothes, and a santa present, and a digital camera, and it sky rockets.

  • I think I only spent around $20 on DD this year.  She is not getting a big present and she doesn't really need anything much.  She is not home a lot to play with toys (less than an hour a night on weeknights, and she goes out with us on errands a lot on the weekend).  She is getting: a doll, a wooden puzzle, three books, crayons, and a shirt.  I know my mom, my sister, and my grandma are getting her toys, and I hope MIL will get her something she can play with (she is notorious for gifts that are not age appropriate).

I know it doesn't sound like much, but I think it is enough.  I want to get her a balance bike when she gets tall enough and probably a kitchen when she is a little older, but not yet.  I am also going to buy her some new clothes after Christmas when I see what she gets as gifts.  Last year she got more clothes than she could wear.

  • I never really added it up but we don't stick to a certain amount every year either. Her first Christmas we probably spent under $50. Lydia's stocking alone is probably $50 this year, and she probably has about $70 of other stuff from us... but they are also getting a dollhouse for both of them, but that only cost $70 so that's another $35 each. I would say if you average them out, I maybe spent $125 on each kid. They are getting a ton of stuff but I got some good deals.

I am really going all out this year because I want Lydia to think Santa is amazing so that next year she will behave.

Pretty much this.  Santa gift was on sale for $25.  The barbie sized Tinkerbell doll from us was on sale for about $20.  Then I used some giftcards (Target recently had a few promotions to spend a certain amount and get a $10 giftcard, I got 2) to pick up a toy microphone she had been wanting and some Minnie Mouse panties to hopefully encourage potty training, so technically those were free.  Plus stocking stuffers, which I think so far I've spent about $25 on and I just realized her stocking is only half full so I need a few more.

  • This is probably our smallest Christmas yet. We have just gotten to the point where we have all the big items and we have no more room anyways so I just didn't get much.

I got the kids 2 pairs of pjs, a board game each, A got a puzzle, responsibility chart, some books, I made her 2 pillowcases, some slippers etc E got a sissor craft kit, some books, a kid shaving kit, some kid binoculars. All his presents fit into a hamper and all of A's fit into a med size amazon box.

From Santa, they are getting a big coloring book, colors and some Santa chocolates.

Their stockings have some bubble bath, a little Lowly stuffed animal, some candy and nicknacks from the dollar bin at Target.

They are seeing my ILs tomorrow and my parents on Sunday. I am sure they will be just fine! haha

I am most proud of the pillowcases. I have never made them before and it was fun to learn and go pick out fabric that they will like. I made A a Minnie Mouse one and then one with pink toile. I made a dinosaur one for E. I bought them older bedding(no characters) so their pillowcase is their chance to have something that they really like. E has a Cars one and Mickey Mouse already

  • A lot--I spent $800 on BF TRU shopping alone. I haven't added it up but I am guessing $350+ on average with M being the least. Both W & T got several thing in the $60 range. My MIL gives us $1000 for the kid's so they get more than I would probably otherwise buy.
  • Little G is nowhere near that because most little kid toys just aren't that expensive.  For my big boys, $180-220 -- and I shop sales pretty well.  Their wish lists are different though.

DS1 is 14 and asked for:  leather biker jacket (scored a real leather one for about $80), comforter set, XBox games, CDs, posters.  Not super crazy, but you figure games run 30-50, CDs are about $10 on sale, and I found a sweet comforter set for $35.

DS4 in comparison is getting:  Lego Duplo sets ($10 regular and $18 for the Toy Story one), Toy Story Potato Heads, Little People airplane set, & books.  I'm probably at $75 for him.

Oh, and Santa found Nerf guns for $5 and is bringing those for Christmas morning excitement along with some cool board games for the family which happened to be 60-65% off.
