What about your own kids?

Re: Telling kids about Santa #2

  • My kid is too young, we haven't brought it up yet.

I plan to tell her about Santa next year.

  • My kid is too young, but we talk about Santa and she recognizes him in pictures and in person. When the doorbell rings she runs for it and yells "Santa!" and she points to the Christmas tree and says "Santa". He will be alive and well in this house :)

  • J is 6 1/2.  Last year he started to become skeptical about it, so this year we've really hyped it up and are doing are very best to make sure he knows Santa is for real!   There is just something so magical about believing in Santa.

  • Sort of a combination of #1 and #2.

  • DS knows about Santa but I have no idea from where - definitely not my house. I'll let him keep believing as long as he wants. I'll say things like "Some people believe..."  so I'm not straight up lying about it. When he's ready and asks me, I'll answer honestly. Here's an awesome link about it.
  • Santa is alive and well in this house.

Should she ever ask if he's real we will go with "I believe. If you stop believing you'll get underwear for Christmas." :-)

  • DS1 has played along for years with all of it - Santa, Tooth Fairy, etc - because he knew that Santa would keep bringing him things along with his little brothers.  Stepmom told DS3 this past year that Santa wasn't real (me=not happy) but I still insist that he is.  I'm also sad for DS3 that he was told instead of figuring it out for himself, because I think kids figure things out when they're ready to.

*I* believe in Santa, as the spirit of Christmas, giving, joy, and selflessness.  Saint Nick was a real person who shared with others out of his own heart of thankfulness and gratitude for what he had been given, and how he felt about God's gifts.  I see absolutely no problem teaching my children to emulate that, and to even be Santa - in the flesh - for others as they grow up.  Not that I view it exactly the same, but I try to teach them to be Jesus' "hands and feet" on earth and help others too.

This year, Little G has started getting excited about seeing "Sata" different places.  We've also watched Veggie Tales' Saint Nicholas: A Story about Joyful Giving along with some of the other traditional cartoons.  The big boys know that they are expected to believe in the real Santa, flying reindeer, etc until LG is ready to move out of that phase.
