Christmas Plans?

I know we have asked about what everybody has planned for NYE, but what about what you guys are doing for Christmas.

Has anybody had a bear of a time figuring out the logistics of  appeasing both sides and each other?

Are you traveling, staying home, visiting family? Following any Christmas traditions or starting a new one?

We are having a "quiet, early, just the two of us opening presents night" on Friday and then leaving early Saturday to go stay in SC with my sister and her family. She lives half an hour from both our parents and her in-laws, so we will be going to Christmas Eve service with my folks and eating shrimp creole (which is a tradition my other sister and I started over 10 years ago). Then we will be having a big Christmas meal on Sunday with the whole family (my niece/nephew and both sets of grandparents).  On Monday we are doing Christmas with my cousin and her kids, so it will be a busy weekend.
We won't be seeing DH's family for Christmas this year, but we did Christmas with them over Thanksgiving and we will be seeing his youngest brother (and possibly the other as well as his SIL if they can make it) around New Year's eve. Last year we were able to work it out that both my parents and his family came up to visit and did Christmas at our house and then we traveled down to my sister's house for NYE and did Christmas with her family and my cousin's then. And in past years, before we were married, we did a long roadtrip that had us going from DH's family's house near Atlanta, GA to my family's on the GA-SC border to my cousin in Columbia, SC and back to our apartment in Augusta, GA, which was a little insane.

Re: Christmas Plans?

  • Ugh, the dreaded holiday travel.  My family lives about 15 minutes north of where we live, and his family lives about an hour south, so we tend to have to see both families on most holidays.  Plus, my parents are divorced and so are his, so it's usually two stops in each town.  Don't get me wrong, I love both of our families, but it just almost ruins holidays for us because by the time we get home we're exhausted from driving all over and can never stay at one place long enough to really relax and enjoy it.  After this past Thanksgiving we vowed that next Thanksgiving we're staying home and doing Thanksgiving with just the two of us.  With that little rant said lol here is our Christmas schedule...

Christmas Eve we will go to my Mom's house for dinner, drinks and to spend a few hours socializing.  Typically my Dad, even though my parents are divorced, will join us for this, but I think this year he wants to have his own Christmas Eve party, so it looks like we'll be stopping by his house as well, luckily they only live a few miles apart.  We'll go back to our apartment for the night and then wake up early Christmas morning to go back to my Mom's for breakfast and presents, then we go over to my Dad's for a few hours, and then we drive down to Jason's grandmom's house to celebrate and have dinner/dessert with his family.  His Dad lives in FL and usually stays with Jason's uncle so typically we'd also have to go there but luckily this year his Dad is coming up a few weeks later.  After his grandmom's, we'll finally make our way back home and have our traditional conversation of swearing off family holidays, but then next year we'll do it all over again lol.

Now that we have a bigger place I am going to try to convince both sides of the family to come to us for Easter so we're not the ones doing all the traveling around...fingers crossed they go for it.

  •  This year is my awesome year, so I'm excited.

Thursday is my last day of work and is also payday. Friday is Keith's work party, so I'll run some errands in the morning and then go to that at around 11am. He'll get off when it's over, at around 1pm. I'm not sure what we'll do for the rest of the day, but probably just finish cleaning the house and stuff.

Saturday morning at 7:30am, we'll go to my mom and dad's and open presents. Then we'll all 4 go out to eat breakfast. After that, we'll probably go home for a few hours and finish some stuff up, and Keith has to start brining (sp?) the turkey. Then we'll probably go out to eat dinner with them that night. Then we'll come home and Keith will ahve to put the pork butts on to smoke.

Sunday morning, my mom and dad will come over at around 9am and my mom will bring the stuff santa delivered to their house, for Keith and I. lol And then at around 11am everyone else will come over and we'll eat some snacky food (cheese and crackers, shrimp cocktail *yuck*, etc. And then we'll open presents. And, we are weird so we open 1 by 1 and take turns so everyone can see what everyone gets. Then we'll finally finish that at around 1pm and it'll be time to eat the real food. And we are having smoked turkey, pork butt, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, mac & cheese, dinner rolls, and I think that's it. Then we'll sit around and talk and stuff and we might play a game of chickenfoot or something. Then that night we'll probably all go to the movies. I really want to see We Bought a Zoo, but we'll see. And then everyone will go home.

Then on the 29th, we'll head to BIL and SIL's and do Christmas with them and Keith's mom and Jacey and Keith's grandpa. And we'll probably stay the night, hopefully in a hotel. Then we'll be heading to Arlington on the 30th, to go to Six Flags and use our free night in the hotel there that Keith won last week. Then we MIGHT go to Austin on Saturday, but we're not sure yet.

And I think that's it! lol Oh, I forgot... I've got to go before we leave on the 29th and pick up the song I had framed for Keith. That's the earliest they can have it done, so I'll just take it with us and have him open it down there. It worked out ok.

  • We got this year planned out fairly easy.

Friday night DH and I are celebrating at our house together. Our families are from the same town, but they're an hour and a half south.

Saturday we're heading down to celebrate christmas eve with my mom's side of the family.  Then we're staying at my parents house that night. Christmas morning we'll be opening gifts with my family and then heading over to MIL's house to celebrate Christmas day.

The day after (monday) we'll be heading back to my parents house to celebrate Christmas with my dads side of the family.

I look forward to next year when Christmas will be on a Tuesday. So we'll get to have Christmas with my Dads side on Saturday. And it will be much less of a hassle and a rush.

  • Our families are way too far apart to have to do the back and forth travelling thing.  This year, my parents are here for Christmas.  It'll just be the four of us, so I expect a nice quiet time.

His parents are 2.5 hours away, so we'll drive to their place on NYE and spend the night.  His brother, SIL and the kids will meet us there (they are 2 hours the other direction).

  • Ok I answered this in a subsequent post. Oh well. DH did say he wanted to visit my mom next Christmas. Guess he started to realize he would miss me. We see his mom several times a yaer and more so now that he bought a hunting ranch 2 hours from her house. We pass through and see her on our way back for a shower and lunch. He spent Christmas eve hunting or trying too.
