Dish soap for hand-washing dishes?

I don't have a dishwasher, and my dish soap sucks.  Once my dishes dry, they have spots all over them, making them look dirty.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good dish soap that won't do this?  I'd like to have presentable-looking dishes...

Re: Dish soap for hand-washing dishes?

  • I would just start drying your dishes. Its probably your water, not your soap.

Yup, water spots are usually hard water. Either dry them or get a water softener.

  • and to answer your soap question, my chemist friend says they use DAWN in the lab since it is the soap that cuts protein.

    So that's what I use.

Do you rinse them with hot water?  That might help.

  • We use Dawn as well.  I agree with PP's, I would just dry them.  We have a dishwasher but on the rare occassion that I hand wash something I just dry it as soon as I'm done washing it.
  • Drying works, but if you don't want to have to deal with that I'd say go with Dawn, or something else in an ultra-concentrated formula. Gain works really well.

If it is your water, Dawn will work just fine; when I was growing up we used spring water and there was a lot of buildup in the toilet, on the shower, on the dishes, etc. that required tons of cleaning. Like I said before, anything ultra-concentrated should help with that.

  • We use Sunlight dishsoap. My boyfriend works in the oilfield and comes home almost every night with crude oil and that's the only stuff that will get it off his skin without being super harsh on it. So if it can get off oil, then I'm more than happy to use it on my dirty dishes.
