Road trip from RI To FL -places to stop?

Another trip I was thinking about putting together mid spring was a road trip from RI to FL.  Trying to comprise a list of place to stop at, and get the budget in order for this.  I have family in Cape Coral, figured we can stop here and there on the way down, use my hotel points, use the car we have currently, so no expense there.  Budget around 1500 thinking, gas probably be the most of this.

  • Just using google maps to get a rough idea where you'd be going (I did RI to Cape Coral) the obvious places for me are: NYC, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Richmond and Savannah....those are pretty much on the direct route.  If you want to go off of your route some other places I would consider are the Poconos, Williamsburg, VA, maybe a beach in NJ, VA, SC, etc.

  • Annapolis, MD

    Savannah

Both really charming towns/cities.  Nice B&Bs and enjoyable for a couple days each, if you have the time, or just a day, if you don't.

Unfortunately, not a whole lot b/w DC and Savannah (Florence, SC, while not a 'must see city', makes a good stop just to break up the drive, if you want an overnight).  Similar deal b/w Savannah and CC (my H's parents live in CC, so I've done the DC/VA drive to FL many times :)).

I agree with all those cities!

  • the drive should only take about 23 hours. do you NEED to stop somehwere or do you just want to? NYC is onyl a few hours away from you, same with philly-imo-too close to stop. richmond VA might be a good mid point to stop.

Don't need to at all, just figuring we really never left New England area really, be nice to stop at places worth while to stop.  If we don't stop, might as well fly at that rate and rent a car.  We figured get in one road trip on the coast all the way down might be fun.

i misunderstood the point of your post then-thought you were looking for someplace to stay overnight mid-trip just out of necessity.

if you want to make a ton of stops there are certainly many areas to do so. how long do you want the trip to take?
