Moms who had/have morning sickness: Input, please!

Recently my SIL/BF found out she and her husband are expecting their first baby(!), but they have decided to wait until she's out of the first trimester to tell anyone but their immediate families.  She is about 7 weeks now, and her morning sickness is kicking in big-time.  Since she is hoping to be able to keep her pregnancy quiet for now, she is really worried about getting through the workday and events with friends without anyone noticing her trying to keep her cookies down.

We were talking about it today, and I got to thinking that I would like to put together a little gift basket to surprise her with full of some little things that she might find helpful in the next month or two.  Since I never experienced morning sickness myself, I was wondering if there is anything those who have found helpful.  I'd also like to include a few pregnancy-safe medications for everyday stuff since she is worried about working in a health-field while pregnant & not being able to treat any cold & flu symptoms as she otherwise would.

Some of my thoughts for the package include:
-A water bottle with filter for filling at work
-Sea-Bands
-Those little disposable toothbrushes
-Preggie Pops/candies
-Box of Saltines & box of graham crackers
-Ginger supplements (Does this work/would it be better in tea form?)
-Ginger ale
-Gum/mints
-I thought about maybe making a trail mix like this: http://www.mommyser.com/myblog/chocolate-back-pregnancy-menu-plus-great-trail-mix-recipe
-Tylenol
-Benadryl
-Tums
-Vicks
-Cough Drops

Any other ideas?  Thanks in advance, ladies!

  • That is such a great and thoughtful gift idea. I hope she's able to make herself better to keep her secret safe! Everything you've alreay listed is a great idea. I would add some form of hard candy. Somedays I felt better only b/c I always had something in my mouth like jolly ranchers or peppermint candies. Some things that were recommended to me were Ginger tea, B6 supplements, Unisom (pregnancy safe sleeping pill that helps with N/V) and peppermint inscents. I may be able to think of some more things that I tried when I'm more awake. I tried so many different remedies along with prescription meds from my OB to get past the morning sickness!

  • What a nice idea!

I LOVE Preggie Pop Drops-- just like the pops only in stickless form/ drops.  They are awesome.  I especially love the tangerine and raspberry flavors, mmm.  Jolly Ranchers work in a pinch as well.

Ritz crackers work a lot better for me than saltines.  Less of a yucky dry flavor in my mouth to gag on, and the flavor is much better IMO.

Soda water like Pellegrino, Perrier or the like is very helpful for me.  Maybe add a bottle of that and a bottle of ginger ale so she can see if one of those helps?

  • I went through lots of hard candy. My favorite was jolly ranchers and lemon drops. Right now gum is useful.

  • I didn't have it terribly, but Sprite helped me. It's caffeine free too.

  • I agree with hard candy.  Werthers were my go to.

Also something with protein like string cheese, but that probably wouldn't be good for a gift basket.

    Trader Joe's Ginger Snaps.

  • Sour stuff helped me too.  Sour watermelons in particular.  Thing is, m/s is such an individual thing - what helps someone would make someone else gag :(

    Agreed.

Like Star, and her Ritz crackers - I could only eat oayster crackers or saltines, the "butter" in Ritz made me gag. :(

Either way, I think your idea is sweet and hopefully some of the things you listed give her relief.

  • Thanks, guys!  I can't wait to put everything together and give it to her!
