Red Cross

Has anyone worked for Red Cross before? They have a job posting in our area and I've never worked for a non-profit before (which I believe they are..)

Have you heard anything about them?

If it adds anything to the question, it's an HR posting..

Re: Red Cross

  • I have a friend that works for the Red Cross. I applied to a job and never heard back from them... I was definitely qualified too... anyway, I heard the pay isn't very good, but that is pretty normal for non-profits.  Other than that, my friend really enjoys working for them.
  • At my previous job we worked directly with the Red Cross. My boss was on their board of directors, and as a result, I also participated with tasks. They seem to be a good employer if you're passionate about their mission. If you're only so-so committed to their cause(s) I would say to look elsewhere. The people I met/talked to were all very dedicated to the Red Cross specifically.

Like PP mentioned, the pay isn't usually too good. If you like the job though, I don't see this as a bad thing.

  • Pay in the nonprofit sector is lower than what you'd expect in the private sector, BUT the benefits normally more than make up for it.

I was hired in to a nonprofit agency with 20 days PTO, my health insurance costs are about 1/3 of what my friends pay in the private sector, and the hours are amazing.

  • My friend's first HR job was at the RedCross.  She worked there for a few years and I think she liked it.  this was in Columbus, OH.

  • Both my mother and sister work for the Red Cross.  My mom has been a lifer and my sister for about 6 years.  My sister was dying to get out because in Boston, they are cutting jobs left and right.  My mom, who is in TX now, but has also run Red Cross offices in Europe and Japan, is starting to look because the organization as a whole is very unstable right now.  Jobs are being cut all over the place.  They both love working for them but the instability is making everyone nervous

  • I worked for them in England, loved it. My boss was horrific but otherwise I had a good experience.
