Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

My H and I will be in Germany in April.  We are going to Munich and Berlin, but we're considering a few other stops as well and the possibility of Rothenburg came up.

Has anyone been there and can you tell me a little about it?  Is it worth a visit?

From what I've read, some people love it and others hate it because it has become so touristy, especially during the day.  If we visited we would probably have one full day and stay one or two nights.

Also, if you have any recs for day trips from Munich and Berlin then I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Re: Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

  • We did Rothenburg. It was touristy, but it was my first trip to Germany so I enjoyed it. I would classify a lot of the places we visited as "touristy" though. What about the castles- Neuschwanstein and the other one there (I forget the name). I don't think they are too far from Munich.
  • I have been to Rothenburg and I agree that it is touristy but I too loved it.  I am into the touristy thing.  If you want to visit some of the quaint towns, try the Romantic Road....leads into Munich.  http://www.romanticroad.com/  I loved Dinkelsbuhl (spelling?)

  • If you are going to Berlin, I highly recommend Dresden as a day trip or a short overnite.  Its about a two hour train and there are lots of trains back and forth from Berlin Hauptbahnhof.  Its my husbands favorite town in germany.
  • Thank you all for the feedback!

I didn't know about Dinkelsbuhl but just looked it up and I'm definitely interested.  It looks charming, similar to Rothenburg but less overrun with tourists and closer to Munich which is also a plus.  Maybe we should go there instead?

We have Neuschwanstein Castle/Fussen on our list for a day trip and I'll also look into Dresden from Berlin since it sounds easily accessible.

  • We were there in the spring and it was fantastic. It would be bad in summer, though.
  • I'm glad we'll be there in the spring.  I'm hoping that by going in the shoulder season we'll miss some of the crowds.

What about Quedlinburg?  Has anyone been there?

The more I search and read, the more places I want to go.  It's neverending.  LOL.

  • I was there 10 years ago and loved it.  Although touristy, it was very quaint and beautiful I thought.  We were also there in spring, so it wasn't so bad.

Neuschwanstein was great.  And, while sobering, we also did a trip to Dachau concentration camp from Munich.

  • I don't know if I'd recommend 2 nights there.  I'd suggest arriving in the evening, staying that night, and then getting up early to tour around before things get busy.  That's what we did (on Rick Steve's recommendation) and there were hardly any tourists.  Also, I loved wandering around the city at night.

Rick Steves also has an audio tour you can download from his website.  I highly recommend it (and all his downloadable audio tours).

Nearish to Munich, I'd recommend visiting Ludwig's castles.  There are a few in Bavaria.  Also, Salzburg is close to Munich.  We wanted to visit it, but didn't have a chance.  I hear it's beautiful.

  • I wasn't on here yesterday and just now saw this.  Thanks for the input!

Since Rothenburg is so small, I think we've decided to arrive midday and only spend one night there.

PinkHighlighter -- I'm glad you mentioned Salzburg as a day trip from Munich.  We'd like to visit but we were debating on if we'd have enough time.  It looks like the train takes about 2 hours one way which doesn't sound bad to me, but others kept saying one day in Salzburg wasn't enough which was making me second guess.  I think we're just looking to maybe do one tour and roam around for a bit so hopefully it will be sufficient.  Thanks again!
