Bedbugs? Where to stay in NYC?

This is our first trip to NYC and we want to stay in a nice decent hotel that is bed bug free. Trying to keep it around $200 a night or less. All the reviews on tripadvisor for hotels seem to have reports of bedbugs, even for expensive hotels! It seems to be a big problem and now I am rethinking our trip after reading of people bringing bedbugs home and spending thousands trying to get rid of them. Any suggestions on a clean bed bug free place to stay in NYC?

Re: Bedbugs? Where to stay in NYC?

  • IDK.. I've been to NYC plenty of times.  I've mostly stayed at the Marriott Marquis or the Hudson Hotel and have never had problems.

For the recored, I take TripAdvisory with a grain of salt.  It's pretty informative. At the same time most people never post comments and those that do are more apt to have complaints.   If you think about all the guests that stay at the hotel compared to those who  actually make negative online comments about a property it's not really a good statistic source.

For example: I use to work at  285 room hotel for 10 years (not in NYC)  Yet there are only 573 comments TOTAL on TripAdvisory.  Is that really a good indication on what the hotel is like?   Not really.

You really don't think that 573 reviews can give people a pretty good idea about a hotel?  If 100 people felt strongly enough to write complaints, that's a pretty good sign that something is wrong.

OP, all sorts of hotels everywhere have had bedbugs.  This is true everywhere, not just NYC.  If you refuse to  stay anywhere that has ever had a bed bug, you'll probably have to just stay at home.  (Note: even offices get bed bugs.)

  • You can always check the bed bug registry, not sure if this is any more/less accurate than TA.

I always do a visual inspection, no matter where I'm staying.

  • FTR, you could get bed bugs from sitting in your doctor's office waiting room. Indifferent

  • I understand you can get bedbugs just about anywhere, but I am trying my best to avoid staying in a hotel that has them. Anyone have suggestions for a hotel to stay at in NYC?
  • Hotel mela off of times square is nice and very convenient/well priced. I have also stayed at the Hyatt on 6th Avenue and love the location as well as the Barclay Intercontinental. Both of which are nice but more on the pricey side. There is a potential for bedbugs anywhere, like everyone else has said. Just make sure to check the bed well, lift up sheets, look behind the mattress, don't sit your bags on soft surfaces and you should be just fine. Bedbugs are visible so a thorough search should ease your mind.
  • i've stayed at the gem in chelsea and the new yorker near penn station - both were clean and affordable. DH's employer uses the new yorker regularly, if bed bugs were an issue word would spread like wildfire.

the best way to avoid it is to check the room thoroughly BEFORE unpacking-check everywhere  in the room. that applies to everywhere on the planet-not just nyc.

No I do not.   573 reviews in 10 years does not say a lot when there are 285 rooms sold out 80% of the year.   I only look at  cleaning and service reviews in the last 6 months.  Hotels staff and management change often.  More than likely the bad staff is already gone.

  • If you're that paranoid, our exterminator recommends leaving your suitcases, packed, in the hotel bathroom and washing all contents immediately on arrival back home.

As others said, they also leave signs that can be checked for on arrival.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • I completely understand the fear of bedbugs!  Others might think I'm being extreme if I told them I keep my luggage in the bathroom when I stay in hotels, but I knew someone who had to deal with the horrible monsters in their home and it was horrible (and expensive).  I will take precautions and hope it doesn't happen.

Anyway - my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our clean room at The Benjamin in midtown NYC a few weeks ago.  Also, the hotel's restaurant (The National) is wonderful!  The restaurant's chef is Geoffrey Zakarian and he just won the Next Iron Chef.

    Have fun!!!
