s/o: Flights from US to EU

s/o my post below, I'm using kayak primarily to look for our flights to Europe in April...is there another search engine you recommend?

 Or time to buy?

When I started tracking flights about 1.5 months ago they were in the $700s and now we're up into the $900s.  I'm wondering if we should have booked earlier, or if there's a chance they'll drop again.  Or if I should be searching somewhere other than kayak. TIA

ETA if interested: Ideally we'd like to fly out Friday, Mar 30th out of ORD to AMS and return Sunday, April 15th, fly LHR to ORD (ideally departing after 10am but no later than 3pm)

Re: s/o: Flights from US to EU

  • When in April?

    Where are you flying into?

  • Over the Easter holidays is a very busy time to head to Europe.  I wouldn't wait much past February to book, particularly now since airlines are reducing flights.

Yea, it seems that they're already increasing unfortunately.  Thanks!
  • I'm having the same problem (we're going in March/April also).  It went up about $100 and I'm worried it will keep going up.  The good thing for us is that we're a little flexible with our dates and where we fly in and out.  We've found it's much cheaper to fly on Tuesdays and we're willing to choose a different airport if it's worth it, but I know that wouldn't work for everyone.  Good luck!

  • bing.com has a price predictor that is pretty accurate.

amsterdam is really popular over easter, though, so prices are likely to be high.

Ah, forgot about bing. Thanks for the reminder!

Ha, and we anticipated that April would be less popular. Oh well.

  • that is a very nice time to go to amsterdam!  when we lived in amsterdam, I used skyscanner.nl (there is an english button) because you could scan by the month and it will tell you when the cheapest flights are that month.

You can also watch www.klm.com for flights.  They are delta's dutch partner and usually have some good deals.

Also, with the return flights, there are specific times in which flights leave so if you want a straight flight, you'll probably leave in the early evening and land in Amsterdam around 8AM or so.  Returning, flights usually leave mid-after and get you back to the US around mid-afternoon.

Have a nice time on your trip.  Amsterdam is a bit chilly and rainy at the beginning of march but you'll see sun and tulips!

Thanks for the advice.  We'll be in Amsterdam the last day of March/early April.  I think on the end of the tulips, but I'm hoping to see them!

It's hard to know when to book.  Although we have looked at midweek flights and decided for the minimal price difference (~$100pp) we'd rather fly out on a thurs or fri to spend the extra $200 and get 2 more days there.

The tulips will be there then!  Last year the best day of the year to see them was April 22nd or so. Keukenhof (http://www.keukenhof.nl/) usually opens around my birthday (which is March 18th) and there isn't much to see then but it gets really good by mid-April so you'll see good stuff!

You can take a bus to Keukenhof and wander around then rent bikes and ride the bikes through the tulip fields.  It's really pretty.   If you're really adventurous, you can ride rented bikes from Amsterdam through the tulip fields to Keukenhof but that would take you a few hours!

  • Thanks Obsession; that sounds wonderful!  We may even be up for the bike ride.  I'll keep that in mind.
  • I prefer Hipmunk for flight-searching.

  • You should buy your airline ticket 3-4 months before departure, or if you are flexible in dates and destination airport 3 day before departure. you can also save some money if you will buy your ticket on Tuesday! Here you can find some additional tips : Best time to buy airline tickets
