House Bills (and a little AW)

So, it's official that within the next 6 months we're going to buy my mom and stepdad's house from them (the one we've been living in). We're so excited but being the planner that I am I want to be as prepared as possible for this huge change (we're until the summer to go through with the sale because we want to have as much of a nest egg as possible which my parents are fine with).

The question here is, aside from electric and gas, what are your major household expenses? And, if you feel comfortable sharing, how much are those bills? (I know this will vary based on location). Thanks ladies, hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend celebrating with loved ones.

Re: House Bills (and a little AW)

  • Well we put our taxes into our mortgage so we have that. We also have to pay for water and garbage where we live. Water is usually around 90.00 every three months. Other than that we just have gas and electric for the house bills.

  • Our taxes and garbage pick up fee are also included in our mortgage. *ETA- garbage is like $250/year and taxes are around $3500/year divided by 12 payments.

Our water bill is somewhere in the $80-$90 range every three months except during the summer when it can be as much as $130 every three months (we have a lot of plants and grass to water).

Our house, car and umbrella insurance is due every June. The house is around $700 for the year.

Good luck with the purchasing process!

  • Our taxes are really high but they're included in our mortgage.

Besides the mortgage, we have insurance, water, garbage, gas and electric (which is highway robbery here) and cable.

Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • We've escrowed our taxes and our homeowners insurance into our mortgage.  We pay water/sewer and trash to the town separately, we well as electric, and we pay for oil.  Other than that, there's internet/cable/phone if you so choose -- we only have internet and cable.

  • We didn't escrow our taxes so we put money aside for those 2 bills a year. Besides that the next big one is oil

  • In addition to what other people said, I would budget for maintenance, repairs, and improvement.  Everything from seasonal stuff like lawn care to rock salt and snow removal.  Because you live in the house now, maybe you are accustomed to some of those things.  I took a lot for granted while renting, that we now need to pay for to have fixed.

We also have an alarm system, which was free to install but is $32/month for monitoring.

  • Thank you ladies for the information. I'll have to look into escrowing the taxes and insurance when we get to that point.

Your lender will most likely discuss this with you when the time comes... its more commonplace than not, just depends on how much you want to pay per month with your mortgage.  Good luck!
