? Bahamas-Nassau & Paradise Island
Merry Christmas!! I am planning a trip to Nassau with my LO and husband, but while researching, I saw that nassau has a really high crime rate.
This is concerning to me since we will be there with my baby. I know crime can happen anywhere, but some of the tourist areas and residential areas are being targeted (armed robbery). I would hate to go on vacation and get shot!
Has anyone been to these areas in the past year or so? Any comments, good or bad, would be appreciated.
Thank you!
Re: ? Bahamas-Nassau & Paradise Island
I would imagine the resorts would be fine. For our honeymoon this past September, H and I went on a cruise through the Bahamas and one of our stops was Nassau. We weren't impressed. It seemed dirty and we felt rather unsafe what with all the natives standing around by the boat trying to get money from the tourists. We hit a couple of the souvenir shops and hightailed it back to the boat.
If we ever go back, we plan on signing up for a cruise-led excursion to the nicer areas of Nassau.
right????
i had to read it again to be sure???

I have been to Nassau and the Atlantis a couple times. I had heard the same rumors too- but like most resort areas, you are ONLY at the resort. You don't go out and about and walk around down-town Nassau- at least we didn't and didnt know anyone that did other than visiting a festival they had one year. If you stay at Atlantis which I can't recommend enough especially if you're going with a little one (they have amazing kid things and i know you're baby is little but they have wading pools and shallow areas where you could sit w/ the baby..its a great family resort.)
I felt extremly safe- sometimes locals come to the beach to sell items but its never dangerous or did i ever feel unsafe. i wouldnt think twice about it- The bahamas is our favorite vacation spot and its a gorgeous place.
Also- to ease your mind- most resorts, most specifically i know the Atlantis has a shuttle (you pay a little extra) to and from the hotel- and everyone uses it mostly- even we have taken taxis from a diff hotel we stayed at yrs before- and that is all those locals do- take people back and forth so its never unsafe. Remember that TOURISM is the locals biggest revenue so most dont want to do anyhting to hurt that.
