Phoenix, AZ

So, DH & I have one full day to spend in Phoenix.  We are self-described foodies, generally like being outdoors, and learning about area history and culture.  We can't do anything too strenuous (zip lining, horseback riding, etc) because I will be 15 weeks preggo. Any suggestions?  We will have a car so transportation won't be an issue.  TIA!

Re: Phoenix, AZ

  • I presume you can still go hiking (sorry to be a tad ignorant but I have never been preggo), so if that is the case then there are quite a lot of options in the Phoenix area for that! Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak and South Mountain are all good hiking spots. Since you are pregnant, you will probably want to go to South Mountain since there are a lot of trail options ranging from easy to difficult so you can decide what you are feeling up to. Camelback and Piestewa will be more crowded and there are parts on both where you have to pull yourself up or take really big steps. But if you are up for that, then they are good and provide good views of the surrounding area.

Talesin West is a Frank Lloyd Wright house in North Scottsdale so you could check that out. I really enjoyed the Heard Museum when I lived in the Phoenix area - it's north of downtown Phoenix and just a really good Native American Museum.

  • And to make it more confusing, I hiked North Mountain when I was in Phoenix a couple months ago -- the uphill was very gradual and the trails were mostly paved. Pretty views from the top, too.

  • When are you going to be in Phoenix?  If it's before March/April, then hiking is a good recommendation.  If it's later than that, it's probably going to be a little warm for most outdoor activities.

  • Thanks everyone for your responses.  I think we've decided to go for a moderate morning hike then grab a late lunch/early dinner in Olde Town Scottsdale.  Camelback looks a little too daunting for me at this stage so perhaps North Mountain instead.  Appreciate all your help!
