? For the northern nesties

Can you wear Uggs to play in snow? We are going to upstate NY in January and I'm clueless as to what would be an appropriate footwear.

Re: ? For the northern nesties

  • I have never owned a pair of Uggs, so I can't say for sure...I hear they're very warm, but they don't seem very waterproof to me. Maybe there's some waterproof layer in there that I'm not aware of? But when I play in snow, keeping my feet dry is my top priority.

If we're going out to play in the snow and don't have actual waterproof snow boots, I always just wear as many socks as I possibly can (and still fit my feet in my shoes), then I tie plastic shopping bags over my feet, then put on regular tennis shoes. It's not perfect, but the socks keep me warm and bags keep me dry for long enough to have a good time outside.

    Does that help at all?

  • I am one of those anti-Ugg people so I can't comment on that. I'm just wondering where in upstate you're going? I'm from Syracuse. :-)

Thanks, Megan! That's a very helpful tip :) I just don't want to spend $ on snow boots.

  • I agree with Mrs. Mew about them not looking waterproof.  You could try getting some Scotch Guard (the stuff you use to make water bead up on furniture) and spray a couple of layers on that if you are set on wearing Uggs.  I sprayed that on my nice leather shoes (I think it might have been a clothes version, not furniture) and I still have them years later.  They show some wear, but not a ton.

I'm not sure if I like them, either but my sister bought me a pair and I still have to wear them. We are heading to Syracuse, where H is from.

  • I'm not sure if Uggs are waterproof and that's the biggest thing.  Another option is rain boots.  A lot of brands make warm inserts so they transition to snow boots.  My sister has Hunters and the winter bootie inserts and wears those all winter.

Small world!! I'm from the tiny town of Cicero and went to CNS (Cicero-North Syracuse High School). My Dad still lives up there, out in the country in Manlius near Cazenovia Lake. Will you pack me into your suitcase? I'd love to go home, I miss my Daddy. :-)

  • Yeah, if you're just running errands or something, I'm sure your Uggs will be sufficient, but if you're going out to play in the snow for a while, you definitely want something more waterproof. I also have rainboots with the warm inserts that are great, but if it's just a one-time trip, it's probably not worth it to buy boots just for that. Just bag your feet up. :)

  • Im no help but Uggs arent cheap either so since it doesnt seem to be waterproof they might get ruined and for shoes thats over $100 I would feel so bad hehehe. But if there's a way to waterproof them then maybe its not such a bad idea to use it in snow.

  • I have Uggs and live up here in Ohio and I use them everyday bc they keep my feet so warm. Each week, I use the Ugg waterproofing so they won't get ruined bc they are expensive. I have walked around in the snow with them but they were waterproofed and ok. If you go to the Macy or Dillard's show department, you can get an Ugg kit for $20 that has spray for waterproofing, cleaner if you spill anything on them and refresher for the inside of the boot so it doesn't get smelly. Totally worth it!
