WWSND? Unequal Gifts

Sigh. My brother and I had a little quick text msg chat and agreed we shouldn't do Christmas gifts for each other. Too much stress and that's not what it's supposed to be about anyway. I mean to have the same conversation with my sister, but somehow that ended up not happening. I didn't worry too much though because for the past several years, we've just a little something for each other. So that's all I planned.

I bought her this adorable little porcelain mouse statue that is holding a leaf (and could be used as a ring holder by the sink) at Anthro and then had to give her an IOU because the necklace I was making for her ran into problems and I have to start it all over. SHE gave (to both of us), fancy balsamic dressing (the kind that's upwards of $8), olive oil dipping bowls, and a $100 GC to Sur La Table!! I feel awful! Yes, I know that my sister really enjoys giving gifts, but the value disparity just makes me feel like a total heel. :(

Her birthday was in December and mine if in 5 days, so we're celebrating them together by going to tea in late January, something that's becoming our new tradition. I'll give her the new and improved necklace then. I feel like if I come up with something more expensive to give her then, it will be so obvious it's an afterthought as a Christmas gift. However, I also don't want to go completely overboard on her bday gift (which I haven't decided yet) to make up for it either. :/

Re: WWSND? Unequal Gifts

  • Hmm, the gifts you are giving to her (ring holder and necklace in January) seem about equal gift-wise to the gift that is split between you and your H.  I don't think you need to add too much to the Birthday gift, you have until the end of January I'm sure you can think of a little something to add to the gift.  And I would only add a little something to the necklace as a gift if you are sure your sister is gifting something to you for your B-day.

  • i hate unequal gifts.. it always makes me feel the same way you're feeling.

i'm not sure what i would do.. i think i'd probably let it go, or buy something a little more expensive for her bday to make up a little.

i don't think gifts need to be completely equal.. but i'd want try to make up for it a little.

  • I'm someone who LOVES giving gifts. Most of the time we don't get "equal" gifts for what we give, and it truly doesn't bother me at all. Your sister probably also enjoys giving gifts :).

I would try not to let it bother you. Could you maybe pair a pair of earrings with the necklace? Then it all ties together and doesn't look like an afterthought :).
