Three days in Rome before cruise?

We are taking a Mediterranean cruise in August - 10 days, leaving from Rome.  We'd like to go to Italy 3-4 days early to do some sight-seeing.  Is three days in Rome too much?  Should we try to see another city while we're there?  Any recommendations?

Also, is there a specific area of the city we should try and stay in?

Thanks for any ideas!

Re: Three days in Rome before cruise?

  • I don't have any suggestions for hotels because I went the year after college and my friend booked us into a monastery that rents out room because it was cheap (and her DH who was BF at the time has really good connections in the church (he's Italian).  Anyway, I would definitely spend all 3 days in Rome...there is so much to see and take it.  With the cruise you will get a "taste" of each city, but having those 3 days would give you time to really get to know Rome better.  There is so much to see and do (even just people watching), so I would use the whole 3 days in Rome.

  • dh and i did that before our med cruise a few years ago. that amount of time is just fine.

we stayed at a hotel that overlooked trevi fountain. what's your budget per night? i'll be there in a few weeks and are staying at a place that overlooks the pantheon and is much less than the trevi one-not sure what you want to spend though.

  • I dont think that is too much time at all. There is so much to do in Rome!!!

  • can I ask you about which cruise line and ports your going to? I would love to do the same trip. TIA
  • Three days is Rome is a nice taster.  Plenty to do and less hassle than hoofing it around with such a short time.

What are you looking for in accommodations?

Via Veneto is very pretty, kind of spendy hotels and pricey shops.  Beautiful views of the city through.

Trastevere has a nice, less touristy neighborhood feel

For ease and convenience of slight seeing, lots of choices by Trevi and/or the Spanish Steps (which isn't really that far from Via Veneto, if you just wanted to walk over).

  • We did this before a cruise and loved every minute in Rome.  We stayed at a small hotel near the train station (StazioneTermini).  I can't remember the name though, but the location was very convenient.  I highly recommend Rick Steves' Rome book.  He had lots of good tips on times to visit the attractions, places to eat, etc.

This!  We spent 4 full days in Rome and easily could have stayed longer.  We loved it and found plenty to see and do.  Three days will be a nice amount of time before your cruise.

  • I think three days before your cruise is the perfect amount of time to spend in Rome (although you could probably spend a month there and still not see everything).  This past August, we just did 1.5 days in Rome on the back end of our cruise and not only was it not nearly enough time, but we were physically exhausted from trying to run around the city to cram everything in.  We all agreed that we wished we would have toured Rome before our cruise so we could have relaxed and been pampered once we got on the ship instead of having to fly home.

We stayed at a small, family run hotel called Residenzia Canali, which was about two blocks from the Piazza Navona.  It was very affordable (even during peak season) and they provided a wonderful breakfast.  It had great reviews on Trip Advisor and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

  • We both work for a large international hotel company so we will stay at one of our hotels at a discount...were more just trying to figure out the best area of the city to focus on.  Sounds like 3 days in Rome is perfect...I'm excited!

We are going on a Celebrity Cruise that goes to a few of the Greek Isles, and also does two full days in Istanbul, which I love.  Thanks everyone.

  • There is one in the Central Park area (I honestly am just beginning my research of Rome so I'm not very familiar with the neighborhoods) that is very affordable.  One that is much more pricey but looks like the most ideal is near Villa Borghese Gardens?

Off-topic, but sounds like we did this cruise last Jul (Rome, Santorini, Mykonos, Istanbul, Ephesus, Athens, Naples, Rome).  It was our first time on X and it was a great experience-- very nice cabins and great specialty restaurants.  We loved the Tuscan Grille and generally, I avoid getting "Italian" outside of IT.   Anyway, really awesome vacation!

  • With 3 days, I'd stay in Rome.  That's how much time we spent there on a multi-city trip to Italy, and it was about right for us.

Our hotel was about half a mile due west of the Spanish Steps, but I wasn't a huge fan so I wouldn't recommend.
