Celebrating New Years with a Toddler

Happy Holidays! Welcome back to the grind if you are at work like me!At least theres another 3-day weekend in sight!

Just a quick question for those with tots--what do you/are you planning to do with your LO to celebrate the NY? Clearly DD will not be up for *** Clark's sad mumbling and fumbling countdown at midnight (he should really have retired years ago on a high note) but Id like to celebrate with her somehow. Ive heard of some people celebrating the GMT NY which is 7pm our time and perhaps I could find a broadcast of London's celebration/countdown on the BBC channel or something? Thats the best I got.....ideas or thoughts?

  • I know Please Touch is having a countdown at noon, and I think three.

There are fireworks at 6 on Penn's Landing.

  • All of this reminds me about how our parents used to take us tithe Ground Round on the Boulevard for their fake new years countdown when we were kids.

  • Hmm, sadly I'll miss my kid's first NY as I'll be at a wedding and she will be home in bed. I'm bitter about this.

This is my parent flammable opinion of the day.

Last year, we put Michael to bed and that was it.  Then I read on The Bump about people going in to kiss their kids, or even wake them up, and was totally dumbfounded.  The thought never even crossed my mind.

    Eh, you're 100% right.

This just stems from my hatred of holiday weddings. I'm also stuck in the middle of trying to figure out how to get 1000 things done before the start of this event on Friday night while working at the same time.

  • we did fireworks at 6 last year. PTM is doing a countdown at noon. Pop Shop in Collingswood is having a parade with kazoos and cookies at 4

NYE isn't a big deal in my book, I am actually praying both of my babies will be asleep regular time so DH and I can enjoy a nice dinner at home in peace and quiet. NYD is clearly the bigger holiday in our household

  • So is it possible to safely navigate the Mummer's Day parade with a 1 year old? I'd love to find a way to go but Big Lar is very skeptical.

We took her on the PATCO last week to go see the Macy's light show and she did great. Is it too crowded? Too many drunks?

  • definitely dont bring a coach if you try to brave it, its crazy crowded. personally, i hate the parade itself, too many SP goombas in one place for me and unless you are there bright and early to get a spot up front you cant see the performances. This is down in SP, if you go closer to CC it may be different but I'm not sure.

another idea is the fancy brigade show at the convention center (and not because this is the group we are in). There is a 12 and 5 show, the latter being the one that is judged. You can usually get tickets the day of and it's fun for the kids. Then you can walk around before/after and hit Broad St and catch some of the parade or grab dinner

Hmm. We might skip it then. No way we can go without a stroller. She's too heavy to wear and too young to walk.  Thanks for the feedback.

  • Sadly Im not in Philly anymore (Im too lazy to change my profile thingy) so none of the local events will work for me. I should look into events here though, thats a good idea.

NYE isnt really a big deal in our house either so Im certainly not planning to wake her up (Thats crazycakes!), but Id like to include her some way if I can.

  • We have friends who have been bringing strollers to South Philly for years, NBD.  One's husband is a Mummer - she just makes it work.
Our plan in to join them in SP when the String Bands kick off. I have never really felt the drunkenness was out of control down there, but there is definitely some open container action.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • i think we are going to try the PTM midday thing.

but honestly we have a kitchen floor to lay and tile to grout. so um at least i won't be in labor this year?

  • Generally, the areas around the performance areas (check out where they are this year) are the most crowded and will not work with a stroller, i.e. Broad from Oregon to McKean (especially near Methodist Hospital, Beneficial Bank and the funeral homes) and again around Washington Ave and in CC near the Doubletree. Any other place along Broad Street where they typically don't perform is usually not crowded at all.

  • also i walked part of the parade route in labor last year. hoping to speed things up. i really should have napped.

i will say this new years is never as crowded as PIFA was this year and we took a stroller. also the parade isn't too full and you can often jump/walk in the street. our only hold back to go to the parade this year is our home is no longer two blocks and way and al last no bathroom right there.

    Some is an understatement!!!!

  • I would NEVER wake this kid up if he was sleeping not even for NYE!

I would love to do PTM but as usual dh is working so we might be able to make the 3:00.

We're having friends over that night and I just got an email from Bistro Romano for a NYE dinner at 3:30 or 4:00 that is 35 per person for a four course meal and kids under 10 are free.  The early seating is so you can make the 6:00 fireworks at Penns Landing.  That could be fun too.

I had that plan 3 years ago, except we had later reservations.  Not thinking, we drove up to old city, and drove around for 2 hours looking for parking.  never made it to our reservations nor saw the fireworks.  The next year, we took the bus up, had dinner at Farmicia, then waited for what seemed like forever in the rain for midnight, it was cold, so we bagged the idea of the fireworks.  took the bus back home just in time to see them on tv.  lol, we are so old.

  • We have never done anything special on NYE with the kids.  Usually mr. eagles works during the day and there is not a snowball's chance in hellll that I would take two kids to the PTM alone during that madhouse, or risk waking them up to kiss them.

This year we are dumping them at MIL's and spending the night in the city!

LD, did you ever think about one of those lightweight aluminum backpacks?  We took Charlie to the WS parade in one of them and he did great!  He loved it because he was up high and could see everything

is this your plan for next year. because i love shrimp and board games. :)

  • We are going to a friends house who also has young kids and doing dinner, board games and movies.  Should be fun.  Emma will hopefully be sleeping in their kid's crib by midnight.

We may try the midday PTM celebration, but Saturday seems so far away right now.

  • This is my plan this year and I want to stab my friends in their lame little eyes. I'm not dead yet.
