DH has a long trip planned for work next month and he wants me to go with him for part of it. We will meet up in Istanbul and spend approximately five days there. Has anyone been? Please tell me about your trip. Where did you stay, what did you do, and of course, how are the restaurants? TIA!
*ETA* Our children will be staying with their grandparents so this is an adults only trip.
Re: Istanbul.
H and I go there to visit family on a regular basis. Since 5 of us usually travel together we rent apartments. I have stayed in hotels as well and I have two reccomendations (1) Istanbul Hilton it is centrally located and some of the rooms have wonderful Bosphorus views. Also you will be amazed at the size of rooms if you compare it to other European hotels (2) I am DYING to stay at this new Doubletree on the Asian side. http://www.hilton.com.tr/tr/Doubletree-Istanbul-Moda/default.aspx Moda is a wonderful neighborhood. I prefer the Asian side because it isn't nearly as crowded or touristy.
Food is amazing check out this site for reccomendations http://istanbuleats.com/
The last time we visited Istanbul H and I had tea at this place. The views were wonderful and the service was great http://www.modateras.com/
Are there any sights that are of particular interest? Maybe I can provide some insight.
Finally try to arrange your airport transport ahead of time. Sometimes cabs will play games in which they pretend to run out of gas. Take a peek at the Istanbul forum on trip advisor, they have great ideas as well.
Have fun!!
Here is my post about our trip to Turkey, including some of the restaurants we tried in Istanbul (at the end):

Of the two (budget) hotels we stayed at in Istanbul, we were very happy with this one:
