I'm planning a trip to Europe next June or July. I'd like to spend a few days in Prague, and I'm thinking about also going to either Dresden, Germany, or to Budapest. Has anyone been to Budapest? Would you recommend it? Does anyone know what travel is like from Prague to Budapest? I'm assuming I'd take a train from one city to the other.
Re: Prague/Budapest?
We did Vienna to Budapest, Budapest to Prague, then back to Vienna. Budapest is a really fab city. We went during Christmas and all the Christmas markets were out... we saw Madame Butterfly at the Opera... overall we just had a really great time. It's a beautiful city. We stayed at a B&B called the Danube guest house. It was perfect and were we to return, we'd stay here again : http://www.danubeguesthouse.com/
By the way we rented a car for this. We always do in Europe... we find Europe is very easy to navigate and the times we've checked, the rail tickets are so expensive that renting a car works out to be a better option for us. Oh, we also stopped in Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic, highly recommend that little town as well.
MrsHark, did you drive much in Hungary? We're planning to spend a week there at Easter, and the guidebooks I've seen recommend against driving in Hungary. Did you have any problems?
...Though come to think of it, I'm guessing we'd be okay since my boyfriend survives driving all the time in Rio during rush hour (although he complains bitterly that drivers in Rio are so much worse than in S?o Paulo).
My heart is as open as the sky.
Read about it on the blog
2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.
Ditto. I went in college, so we stayed in a hostel. I don't remember specific re: transportation, but I remember taking the train and not having a hard time. One of the favorite things we did there was take an open top bus tour. If the weather is nice, I highly recommend it.
I did a sleeper train from Budapest to Prague and it was fine - except I was robbed. And while at the train station in Prague to report it to the police, someone else came to file a complaint.
I still think they are both great cities and worth going to (never been to Germany so can't help there), but if you do take the sleeper train be very careful with your stuff. I had my stuff under my feet on the far edge of the car and was with a friend who had been in the army. We both had stuff stolen and neither of us realized it. Later we thought perhaps that is why so many conductors were tapping on our window but when we looked up to see what they wanted they walked away. They were probably checking to make sure we were asleep.
The train between Prague and Budapest is cheap and takes 5 hours.
Loved Budapestsnd ditto taking the train.
We went to Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest over Thanksgiving (15 days total), and DH and I loved Budapest. Beautiful city, plenty to do but not overwhelming, easy to get around, etc.
We took trains between cities (and visited in above order), and it was easy and cheap. I do wish we had more time to spend outside of the city, and a car would have been nice for this. Definitely go to the baths--so relaxing and fun!
I LOVED Budapest. We visited Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. We traveled by train. I avoid overnight trains if I can because I know too many travelers who have been robbed. Since we went between the 3, I can't really say how long the train between Budapest and Prague might be. You might be able to get a cheap flight too if time is an issue. I haven't spent any time in Germany, so I can't speak to those locations.
