How long

Have you been stationed at your current base (assuming you or your spouse is active duty)?  What's the longest you have been at a single base?

I was in Okinawa on an accompanied extended long tour (so 4 years). We have been at our current base a little over a year.

I thought of this because I know a few AD members who have been at the same base 15 or more years.

Re: How long

  • We've been here at MacDill for two years now. H is going to try and crosstrain here soon so hopefully we'll be leaving. Although most of the people in his shop are here until they request to leave and/or get out.

  • We have only been there like a year and 3 months, and in less than 3 weeks I'll be starting my road trip to our new base.  H's first command he was at for 5 years, and then his shore duty was 3.  When we get to VA we are hoping to be there for at least 5 years, but if we can just stay in that area for the rest of his career (minimum of 10 years) we would be okay with it.

  • From my understanding it is dependent on their SM job and rank. We are looking at moving every 3 years- although I have heard rumors the AF is looking at extending overseas assignments to 4 years. I know there are a few people at our current base that have been here as long as 5-6 years that have the same job as H. I have also heard a couple enlisted guys being here for 10 years.

ETA: We have only been at this base for 4 months.

  • A lot of that will depend on MOS/AFSC and what bases that job is offered at.

We were at our last base just over two years, Dh worked to get this base for a training and follow on assignment, so we should have been there longer. Dh will be here about 16 months.

That makes sense.  They are medical administrative or technician jobs and enlisted.

  • H was stationed in Okinawa for 4 years, and change, his entire first enlistment minus schools, was PTAD recruiting while waiting on his lat move for a year and change in Georgia, and now has been at MCBCP for almost two years. ETA: H's newer MOS limits him to only a few duty stations, unfortunately.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • It will be 4 years next month.  We are PCSing in April.

ETA: This is his first "real" assignment and the first base that we've been together.  He was previously at this base for 5 months while awaiting pilot training, then spent 12 months at another base for pilot training, and then had a 6 month TDY to a third base for training on his specific plane.

  • I was at my first base a little over two years, second base 16 months, third base three and a half years, and I've been at my current base seven months. As someone without kids, I've loved moving around, seeing new places, and working for more than one command.  We love our current base so much we've cleared our dream sheets (basically a signal that we're in no hurry to get orders) and we'd be content to retire here.  Being mil-mil with our jobs really limits the places we can go together, so we request bases most people consider terrible assignments.

I know lots of people who've stayed in one place for a long time.  To the ones (AF) that hate it and want orders, volunteer for a short tour.   Turkey and Korea aren't the end of the world.

  • We were at our last base for just over 2 years and just moved to our new one a few months ago. This will be a somewhat short stay since H is only here for Career Course.

One has no desire to move, and the other went to Korea and returned to the same base.  I was dual-military myself (AF), so I understand the limitations with assignments.  I recently separated after 9 years and DH cross-trained so that opened up more options.  Honestly, I have been lucky.  I loved the three previous bases we have been to so I can't complain.  We currently live in a desolate town in NM, but I know it could be worse.

  • We're at our first post but when I was growing up we were in Korea for 8 which everyone thought was a really long time. Before that, Japan for 3 which isn't too long.

  • DH has been here for 8 years and could be here for at least another 3 or 4.

Many times, it depends on the MOS or the unit.

  • Ours is kind of a strange situation. We've been where we're at for a few months over a year, but we were supposed to have moved already. This is DH's first real assignment so we have nothing else but training to compare it to.

Altogether I think DH was supposed to be at the same base for 2-3 years. People in his career field tend to move around a lot. From what I can tell, the Navy moves people around a lot, but what MOS you have affects that a lot.

  • We'll have been at our current base for 6 years come May.  That's our longest time at any duty station, and we've been told that we can basically stay here indefinitely due to the nature of H's job.  Since I hate moving it's a nice position to be in.

  • Our first duty station was 2 years, second one was 1 year, third base was almost 3 years and now we just got to our fourth one and we'll be here a minimum of 2 years, maximum of three years. The first 2 PCSes were by choice though.

  • In the six years that I've known my DH, his longest assignment has been 23 months. Outside of deployments and school, my DH gets a new assignment every 22-24 months. We are moving in March (after about 21 months) and that is supposed to be a three year assignment. But, we will be in Germany, so, that is why it is longer.

  • We were at the last one 6 months but the was for training. We have been at our current one for 7 months. Well most likely be here 3-4 years total.

  • DH was at his first duty station for 8 years. We'll be at this one for 4 years, give or a take a few months for orders (he's coded so we know we'll be out of here w/in a certain window). After that, it's highly likely he'll finish his career at his next duty station. His AFSC limits his options to <5 bases, and his career field doesn't tend to move them around too much between those bases.

  • DH and I have been assigned to Schofield barracks Hawaii for the last 3 years but have spent two of those years in Iraq. Before that we were in NY for 2 years but 15 months were in Iraq. This summer we are headed to Virginia.

So technically we have spent the most time in Iraq.

  • My first duty station I was there for two years (overseas/ship), next Hawaii (shore) 3 years, then Denver (shore) three years, then Virginia (Ship) 4 years, Now Virginia (Shore) at this command 4 years, I transfer in April and I'm hoping to be there until I retire.

Being single and moving was great now that I have a family I'm not  looking forward to moving as much, DH still has 7 years left and he's talking about going overseas when I retire so we'll see what happens.

  • January will be four years at this base. He just switched to a new unit last Summer and I think they said something like it would mean he'd be here for at least another two years. I'm kinda disappointed we haven't moved yet.
