kindle users
so I have an iPad, but I find it hard to read on for long periods of time and it's just not super portable...I keep it by the bed and it's good if I want to read in the dark while trying to get the baby to sleep, but I'd like something to throw in the diaper bag so I can read when I have time, etc...
so I was just thinking of getting the most basic model but I have a few questions...
1. are the "special offers" annoying? is it worth paying more to not have them? it seems like they won't get in the way...
2. do I really need the power adaptor thing or do you think I can use the USB thing that came with my phone? or can't I just charge it via my laptop?
3. do I really need a case? they seem spendy on Amazon - I was looking in Etsy, but didn't see much that I loved. My diaper bag is full enough, what I like is that I can just slip this in and the kindle is small, I feel like a cover will bulk it up (that is how my iPad feels).

1. The special offers don't bother me, I had one without them and now have the touch with it and it doesn't effect my reading so it's okay.
2. I used mine alot but you can use your phone charger or on your laptop.
3. I recommend the lighted cover from Amazon for the Touch it really protects the kindle and the light is nice. You should have a sleeve at least to protect the screen from dust and what not. One of the ladies at work just knit a sleeve for it and added a button to keep it closed, it took her one night to make it.

I just got the Kindle Fire for Christmas and I also got an iPad. I agree, reading on the iPad after a while is just too much. I'm planning on exclusively using the kindle for reading (although this one does have wifi on it with apps etc).

2012 Reading Challenge
I bought a regular Kindle strictly for reading because th ee-ink would not hurt my eyes. I knew getting a Nook Color (at the time) would kill my eyes.
1. I have the one with special offers and a keyboard. The special offers don't bother me at all. They only pop up at the bottom of the screen and when the screensaver turns on. I have actually bought some of the items that were on the offers. Once a month or so you get an offer to buy a book for $.99!
2. The power adapter that came with the unit plugs into the wall. It connects to the plug-in via USB port so you can also use the cord to charge from your computer. I use my cell phone charger as well to charge it.
3. I originally had a soft cover case and the day after I got it Andrew tripped and fell onto my purse which was on a table and cracked the screen on my Kindle. Amazon sent me a new Kindle and I went out and bought a hard cover leather case for $40 or so at Best Buy. It's an M-Edge case. I also bought the LED light that you slide into the case and flip out and up. It's a touch light that has 3 settings. I don't feel the cover makes it more bulky. I prefer the extra protection after the first accident.

Keep in mind I have a 2nd gen kindle (keyboard, 3G, no special offers because that wasn't even an option), although I did get B a Kindle for Christmas.
I got him the regular Kindle, but paid extra for no special offers. Now he says he doesn't think he'd care, thanks for mentioning that now ha ha. He really likes it. The reason I got that one is because he said he didn't want the touch, and they designed it so that the unit "disappears" as you're reading, to seem more like a book. Thus the smaller overall size (screen is same size though). It sounds silly, but B says it really does feel like that. I also got him the one without the keyboard because I know him, and know he'll do most of his book browsing online, and not need the keyboard so much.
I would absolutely get a decent case for it. I never keep mine out with the toddler around. He threw mine clear across the room while it was in the case and it was fine. I have a Timbuk2 case that is very slim and offers great protection. A kindle with a case is still much smaller than an iPad.
I find that mine takes forever to charge using the USB plugged into my computer. B's did not come with the wall plug and he wants to get one.

The version I got doesn't come with the wall charger either but I think my cell phone adapter thingy should work.

I have the one without special offers, but I have several friends who have the special offers kindle. Some don't mind it, others wish they paid the extra cash to get rid of the ads. From what I understand no ads come up when you are reading, so it's only when the screen is on sleep or on the page that lists your books. That doesn't seem that annoying to me.
