Anyone done a cruise from Dubai?

DH and I have been looking for a trip to take this spring and I came across this cruise.  It is on RCI and the itinerary is:

1 Dubai, U.A.E. --- 6:00 p.m.

2 Fujairah, U.A.E. 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.

I am curious to hear if anyone has done a cruise like this or been to UAE and would/would not recommend cruising?

Re: Anyone done a cruise from Dubai?

  • I've never been on a cruise, but I've lived in Dubai and the itinerary sounds good.  Two days in Muscat is plenty and Abu Dhabi really just has Emirates Palace and the big mosque.  Try to plan it so that you aren't in Abu Dhabi on a Friday so you can see the mosque.

The only thing is that if you wanted to go to yas island to ferrari world you don't have enough time in Abu Dhabi.  Perhaps if you stayed a few extra days in Dubai you could check that out if you were interested.  In any event I'd stay in Dubai 2 or 3 additional days to have tea at the Burj al Arab, go up to the top of the Burj Khalifa, maybe do a desert safari, go to the souk (although feel free to skip this if you've been to a souk anywhere else in the middle east - it's pretty lame compared to most), etc.

As far as clothing and what not, you can basically wear whatever you want in Dubai so long as it's not super scandalous.  I'd probably just be safe and stick to non-spaghetti straps and around knee length shorts just so you don't feel weird and/or freeze with the crazy amounts of air conditioning.  But they really do see expats wearing anything and aren't too fazed by shoulders or knees (as long as you're not going to a mosque).

Oh, if you are going in spring, I'd aim for early spring.  The temp starts staying above 100 by mid-April or so.

  • Is this the one on travelzoo today for $399?

Thank you for the tips.  I think we would probably fly in a day early and would get in at 3 am, so we would have 3 full days in Dubai.  Is Ferrari World worth a day? I have a feeling that DH might feel it is, but I am not so sure...  We would be going the first week of February.  Would that allow for comfortable weather?  Would it be warm enough to swim?  We would like to make at least one of the stops a beach day if possible...

To the other poster- yes it is the travelzoo deal

I don't know about Ferrari World, I never went since it opened shortly before I left.  It's supposed to have good rides.  Abu Dhabi is 1.5 hours from Dubai, so you could go and return to Dubai if you got bored early (or hang out in Abu Dhabi itself for the rest of the day in case you didn't get to see much while on the cruise).

First week of February is a bit cold to swim in my opinion but I'm a wuss.  It'll probably be highs in the low to mid 70s with a bit of a breeze.  That's considered sweater weather for those who live there, but if you're coming from Chicago you may think it's OK for swimming.  I'd imagine the water is OK at that time of year, too.
