another boring post

but I'm stuck and could use some help.  I have to write an email asking a faculty member to be on my committee.  The thing is, it's a weird in between relationship, so a super formal "Dr. Soandso" greeting is weird (honestly).  Everyone goes by their first name and he is a younger faculty = definitely more casual.  In addition, I don't know what to write in the email.  I feel like I should fill it out so it's not just "hey, would you be on my committee", but everything I come up with sounds cheesy.  My reasons for asking are that I like him, he's very smart/would give good input, my boss suggested him and I actually interviewed with him and liked him from the start.  But when I try to write anything about that it comes off like a fan letter :-/

I'm *supposed* to do this by the end of the year, but it's not a real deadline.  It also doesn't help that my project is sucking right now and I just don't feel all that happy about it.  So it's not like I want to say "hey I'm working on X and it's really exciting". bleh.

ETA: lol, I didn't finish my thought.  the point is, I feel like some of you are good at coming up with how to say things for work, hoping for some inspiration :)

Re: another boring post

  • For the professors that i already knew, that were already familiar with my plan i reiterated my plan, confirmed they would be on my committee and asked to what extent they intended to be involved.  This is what i wrote to one of the other professors i was asking to be on my committee, to whom i'd never previously spoken about it, if that helps...

    Dear Dr. x,

Greetings!  I am a Master of Education (Environmental Education) candidate at Huxley College [sent to faculty of different colleges at WWU].  I have begun my thesis research and am inquiring whether you would be interested in and available to participate in the process.  I am soliciting your thoughts because I understand an area in which you specialize to be race in the history of the American West, which is an important focus of my thesis.

My thesis will explain (through literature review) the minimal use of national parks by African Americans as compared to other racial-ethnic groups (normalized for socio-economic factors).  It will recommend possible avenues to make more accessible to African Americans the environmental education efforts of our region's national parks based upon (failed and successful) attempts to rectify achievement gaps in American public schools.

Please feel free to contact me if I can provide more information.  Thank you for your consideration.

    Sincerely,
    CDMay

  • Hi John,

Hope you've had a lovely holiday. I'm putting together a committee for blah, running from date blah to blah. (Or, I've put together, etc.). Boss suggested that you would be an ideal fit, and we would love to have you on board. Your knowledge of blah and your experience in blah would be a great asset to the project.

Looking forward to (hopefully) working together in the future.

    Regards,

    Amanda

  • thanks guys :)  I think a combination of these would be perfect!

Our department is pretty small/close-knit so they usually already know a little about what I do (we give annual presentations) and know what the commitment is, which makes it hard to come up with things to talk about in the email - they already know for the most part!  We do have to include one faculty from outside the department, which I did first because it was easy to explain all about the process and my project.  Now I just have to decide who else to ask...!
