Hi Ladies,
My DH and I are planning a trip to Ireland in the spring. We've got about a week or so to go, any suggestions on destinations, things to see, must dos? I appreciate any suggestions and info!
Also, if you've been...rent a car or find a way to get around another way?
Re: Ireland
it really depends on what you're into: pub crawls vs museums, historical churches vs scrambling through ruins, focusing on one part of Ireland vs seeing all you can see in the time allotted. I have a couple of itineraries I can share if you want to PM me
We rented a car and it was grand
Our little Irish rose came to us on March 5, 2010
Don't drink the water.

We did just over a week and used 3 different bases: Dublin, Kinsale and Galway. This is what our itinerary looked like:
Day 1: We flew into Dublin and spent the night (we did wander around the city some as well).
Day 2: We rented a car and drove to Kinsale (stopping at Powerscourt Gardens and Rock of Cashel on the way).
Day 3: Day trip to Blarney Castle and Cobh.
Day 4: Kinsale all day
Day 5: drove from Kinsale to Galway (stopping at the Cliffs of Moher)...dropped off car/toured Galway in the evening
Day 6: bus tour of the Connemara/toured Galway in the evening
Day 7: train from Galway to Dublin
Day 8: Dublin
Day 9: fly home from Dublin
I was happy with our trip...I felt like we got to see/experience a lot in a short amount of time. We LOVED Kinsale...if you go there def do the walking tour (there is one with Barry and I forget his co-workers name, but they are really interesting!). We weren't overally impressed with Galway, but we aren't really huge into nightlife and that seems to be what Galway is known for. Blarney Castle was skippable in my opinion, but it was on DH's must-do list. Cobh is probably skippable as well, but I enjoyed the museum there. My favorite thing we did in Dublin was the Kilmanham Gaol tour (DH's was the Guinness Factory). Let me know if you have questions about any of the places we went.
I enjoyed the country (southern and western coasts) more than the city (Dublin). Dublin was fine, but, IMO, it's a 2-day city, whereas I could have spent several weeks just relaxing and enjoying the scenery in the smaller coastal towns/villages.
H drove-- between standard (stick) transmission and driving on the left, my simple mind would have been blown
. But he did fine and we had no issues driving-- virtually no traffic or parking hassles.
We're going on a tour through the sourth with CIE tours. It's a partnership between the Irish gov't & a private travel company.
For us Guiness + driving on the wrong side of the road = not getting a rental car.
The good thing about CIE is they do everything for you & some meals are included. The bad thing is you are up on a bus early every morning.
Make sure you specifically rent an automatic unless you're cool with driving standard. Standard is the standard over there. Automatics are quite a bit more $$$.
We stayed in Galway, Doolin, Dingle, Kenmare, and Kinsale, and did day trips to the Aran Islands, Connemara, and Cobh. Mostly stayed in the southwest third or so of the country. It was awesome.
I really enjoyed the Ring of Kerry and Killarney National Park area..It was super pricey though..
We rented a car it was easy enough to drive on the other side of the road and we never got lost with the GPS...more fun to be able to stop where you please. We went with an automatic and there were deals to be had, if you look around.
