Calling in sick for a job interview

I'm one of three people that was invited to interview for a position. I know the other two candidates, as they both work with my husband. One of the women and myself interviewed two weeks ago, but the third candidate (my biggest competition) called in sick and canceled her interview. I assume she rescheduled it and already had the interview, or will have it this week or next. Either way, do you think calling in sick for the interview will count against her?

Re: Calling in sick for a job interview

  • It depends how good of a candidate she is. If I were interviewing, I'd rather she call and reschedule than infect me. THAT would count against her more!

  • Yeah, I would think they would rather not get infected as well, and she was definitely sick. I'm antsy and grasping at straws until the director gets back from vacation and an offer is finally made.

I could honestly see the panel picking any three of us, as we all have something to offer, but we each also have drawbacks. I have the most experience by a long shot, but I've also been a SAHM/grad student for the past three years. The other two candidates recently interviewed for another position, so I imagine their interview answers were more fluid and polished than mine (it was my first interview in 5 years).

  • We just went through this at work.  My boss is interviewing folks for weeks for a position and when someone called in sick, he was really pissed and dropped them from consideration.  Granted, he is an a$$, but just food for thought.
  • Its not fair, but when I worked for a hospital in town, we had a guy call in sick and he was dropped from consideration and he was the strongest candidate.  When I was supporting an HR manager for a couple months, everything was on a points system and if someone wanted to reschedule they'd get a minus five points.  Sometimes the candidate still gets the job other times they don't.  I think it depends on the HR manager.

  • I went to a job interview really sick with bronchitis. Not the smartest thing to do but I got the job. I could manage to pull it together for a few hours and get there. I think it shows commitment (although I don't advocate showing up to workplace sick).

Cancelling shouldn't be done unless you really can't get out of bed, IMO.
