Books Turned Movies

Should I read Water for Elephants and the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo before I see the movies? What are adaptations from book to screenplay you thought were done well? What movies do you think the book was a million times better?

Re: Books Turned Movies

  • I would suggest reading the book for anything before seeing the movie, but thats just me... of course, in doing that I get so judgey about changes made in the conversions that sometimes its hard for me to disassociate one from the other (ie, the earlier Harry Potter movies bothered me to no end).

I am STRONGLY against seeing the American version of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo -- if you want to see a version on screen, please go for the Swedish version  And it was done very well.

I think the only time a book - to - screen conversion had me happy was Game of Thrones.  And with it being my favorite book series, that's major.

I am, however, REALLY looking forward to Hunger Games.  Those trailers are giving me chills.

  • I know both the book and the movie are quite old but I was so disappointed by the movie rendition of a Tree Grows in Brooklyn.  Amazing inspiring read BTW if you are into classics.

  • I always like to see the movie first ans then read the book. If I do it in reverse the movie will never live up to my expectations or what I've imagined it to be like in my mind.

The book "The Help" was amazing and I think the movie did a good job portraying the story with some changes to make it a little more viewer friendly.

I read "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and the subsequent novels in the trilogy before seeing the Swedish version and I did not care for the movies at all. None of the characters except for Lisbeth looked like what I thought they would looked like what I thought they would look like and they mooshed up pasrts of all 3 books in each of the movies...not a fan. I do want to see the American version but will wait to get it on Netflix or from RedBox.

Little Women is my favorite book and I love the film version with Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon despite some of it's inaccuracies.

Well, for starters, I think it's almost insulting that the US felt the need to remake a movie that was JUST made, insinutating that we as Americans are too lazy to read subtitles.  Be that as it may, the woman they casted for Lisbeth cannot hold a torch to the Swedish actress - I mean none of those piercings are real for gods' sakes... plus the portrayl of Lisbeth and Blomkvist as a couple in the way they US is doing it just irks me to say the least.  I mean, I could be missing something?  But I was quite pleased with the Swedish version, I didn't think it needed to be remade so soon (if at all), and if I do want to see a movie version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, that's where I'll go first rather than shelling out $12-15 to see it in the theater.

  • Gotcha. I saw the Swedish version of the first two movies (not sure if the third is out yet) and I did enjoy those, but I would like to see the American version as well to see how they compare. I do agree that it's kind of silly to remake a movie that just came out, but it's such a riveting story I will be interested to see how this director interprets it.

Since I didn't answer the question yesterday, if I'm going to see a movie based on a book, I'd rather not have read the book at all first, because the movies never seem to do the book justice and they just irritate me. I know it's hard to turn a 400 page book into a 1.5-2 hour movie, but sometimes my favorite parts of the book are left out or cut so short it decreases my enjoyment of the movie. I'd rather read the book later to get the full experience.

This and this.  The Harry Potter movies (I've only seen the first three so far, about to watch the fourth) really piss me off.  The books are immeasurably better.

And I haven't even read the Hunger Games but the trailers have me dying to see the movie.  Those of you who've read the books will have to let me know how the movie measures up since I doubt I'll get around to reading the books anytime soon.
