Personalized Melamine Plates

Has anyone made their own? I've found a few sites where I can upload a design (I'd create it in Photoshop) and they will turn it into a melamine plate, but I'm trying to figure out if I could make my own. I found a few websites that suggest using water slide decal paper, sealing with acrylic spray, then sticking to the plate, but I'm not sure if this is the best way? I'd like to make some for birthday presents, but I'm wondering if this is a project where it would be best NOT to DIY. TIA!

  • They have the kits at Hobby Lobby.  I keep wanting to buy one because we did them as kids and I think it would be fun to do one again.

with the kits, you color a picture & mail it to the company that puts it on the plate. I ordered some for my girls for Christmas and they love them.

  • Yeah, I don't need the kit because I've made the design in Photoshop to match the theme of my boys' birthday parties (it will match the invitations, banner, cupcake toppers, etc).

This company lets you upload a .jpg on the website (can be a a photo or a design that you create using digital scrapbook papers/elements) and they will turn it into a plate for $17.95. Seems like a good deal! I was just curious about how to DIY because I've seen quite a few of these kinds of plates on etsy for around $20-- the sellers must not be using this company to make their plates or they wouldn't be making any money!

Here's the one that I designed for my DS1's 2nd Birthday:

  • Hi there, I have photoshop, and a template for the melamine plates. I have searched everywhere for a tutorial on creating the image for the plates in photoshop. I can't find info anywhere! I just need a step by step process on how to create my design in Photoshop. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!
