XP skin problems? now with cute pip

I posted this on pets, but figured I would ask over here too.

Any help or insight would be helpful for me! TIA

I have noticed little scabs on my dog (he's 5) in the past two weeks. He has little scratches on his rump and chest. I think he has been licking or itching slightly more in the past two weeks but I haven't seen him be concentrating on one spot or anything really, and I noticed the scrapes after they were healed over. The scabs were all pretty much coming off, and I dont really know when they got there. Tonight I noticed that he had a spot on his shoulder that was rubbed raw of fur, but wasnt bleeding, and it didnt seem tender when I was cleaning it.

I have read that his breed can have skin problems genetically (Welsh Terrier), but I am not really sure whats going on. I have looked for fleas or bugs on him and haven't found any (he got fleas before from my neighbor at an old apartment and he is not itching or acting anything like then). I thought his skin was dry, or dirty maybe. We boarded him over Christmas, he got a haricut and conditioning - they reported nothing odd or concerning with him.

We moved to NC from NM in Oct, I'm not sure if there is anything environmental, but we are living in an apartment, so he is never outside alone, and doesnt roll in the grass or anything like that - plus this just started happening. I haven't changed his food (he is eating a salmon based food from Costco, grain free called Nature's Grain) he is about 3/4 the way through the bag, so I am doubtful that is causing it.

I had maybe thought that something happened when he was boarded that they didnt tell me about (a fight or getting into something, idk) but seeing this new spot tonight has me very worried, and think it is not that.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on or what I could do? When should I take him to the vet? I was thinking about just taking him in tomorrow to see if they had any insights...

Should I put his cone on him tonight so that he stops licking the raw skin area?

Re: XP skin problems? now with cute pip

  • My best guess is a change in humidity, both seasonal and from the move.  My dogs all had dry skin in CA, but it hasn't been an issue at all here.

For now, use a teensy bit of olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, etc, rubbed in to any skin that's flaky.  If he has raw spots, I'd suggest treating those with Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment, whatever you have on hand, and yes, unfortunately, I'd recommend a cone of shame or an inflatable collar for a couple days to see if things start healing.

Do you have a humidifier you can use?  Even with one running all the time we had flaky skin, so I was boiling pots of water on the stove and showering with the door open to keep some humidity in the air.

My second guess is that it's behavioral/anxiety still related to the move.

  • Ditto everything Ojo said. Also, was the boarding place different than where he normally goes for grooming? If it started after that it could be that they used a shampoo or conditioner that he is allergic to that is bothering his skin. An oatmeal shampoo can also help calm the skin.

  • I noticed my dog was having what sounds like the same issue, so we made a trip to the vet the other day. She told me it was an allergic reaction/bacterial infection and gave me some antibiotics to give him for 2 weeks. So far that seems to be helping.

I think it started before, but I will keep checking on his skin, I have an oatmeal shampoo for him around here somewhere.

  • Thanks ladies! It did recently get more dry (a touch) here, but were are used to dry desert air, I will keep an eye out and try to make it more humid in the house if I can.

How would I know if it were anxiety/behavioral? He doesnt seem anxious, he eats and drinks normal, his potty time is normal, he acts the same around the house- are there other things I should be looking for? If it is that, what should I do to help the little guy?

ETA: I did cone him :(  and put neosporin on his shoulder. All the other scratches he had seem healed over (scab separated from the skin, nothing underneath)

  • You could try vitamin C to boost his immune system, fish oil for skin and coat, and vitamin E to help with the fish oil.

  • Here is a picture of William's anger about being in the cone of shame. That dog has a good stink eye

  • Do you have carpet in your new house? I wonder if the former tenants used some harsh chemicals and/or didn't rinse it well enough when they did their final cleaning.

that could totally be it, since it is old carpet. what would I do about that?

Yep, and we add a few drops of essential oil, but the vinegar and water will do the trick. The carpet won't feel as soft as it would if you used carpet shampoo, but the stiffness dissipates after a couple vacuumings.

If I'm feeling wild, I use tea tree oil and lavender.

  • Jilly, I'm glad you posted this.  I just saw one of the cats scratch along his jaw line so hard he ripped some fur out and it's all red and irritated now.  Sad  The air is really dry here.  I'm going to take some of the suggestions above and see if he'll let me take care of him.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
