Hello
We're decided where to go on our annual July trip. My husband really wants to go to Fiji, but I'm not sold. We went to Bora Bora/Moorea a couple years ago and I loved it. But the flight was excruciating. The only thing that made it bearable was that amazing Bora Bora water and our gorgeous resorts. I've done a little preliminary research on Fiji and it just doesn't seem to compare. Here's my very long list of gripes/concerns: The water seems dark in many places, the sand seems dark and rocky and hard. We have pretty high standards with resorts and even the highly touted ones seem a little sketchy. The food gets consistently terrible reviews as does the service. Many comments regarding no doctor on island (everyone says odds are you won't need one, but I did need one in Mexico once and in Anguilla once...so I'm totally paranoid) or even a place to buy aspirin or immmodium or something you forgot. Seems like you're pretty much stuck eating at the resort the whole time (I loved discovering local restaurants off the motu in bora bora). I apologize if I sound beotchy...don't mean to. But if I'm going to have to take that scary long flight again, and spend a boatload of cash, I want it to be worth it. I did read all your reviews on your blog. Were you able to check out any of the most luxurious resorts while you were there? How would you compare Fiji to FP? Preference? Would you ever choose Fiji OVER FP?
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks a million
Kirstin
Re: Caroline/PrincessBride.....help with Fiji
sorry I am crashing your post
We spent alittle over 3 weeks in Fiji and stayed on 3 islands and 5 resorts. From what you wrote, I doubt Fiji is for you unless you stay on Turtle Island or an all-inclusive resort of at least $1000/night on a smaller island. I say this nicely.
Fiji is fairly primitive for the most part. The island is 49% Indians so alot of the food you encounter off the resort is Indian food. I couldn't handle the smell and questioned the cleanliness. The Fijians are wonderfully sweet people. It is fun to visit the villages and see how they live. The crafts are nice. Beaches are so-so depending on where you go. The best beaches/water are on the smaller islands. On Viti Levu, I'd rec. the Intercontinental on the Coral Coast. It has a decent beach. We really enjoyed the Sun Coast for snorkeling and the private beaches on the tours. Mana island had good food (still resort), great beaches, decent accommodation...but it is NOT luxurious. I could keep going on and on but overall it sounds like FP is more your style. HTH!
