I'm taking my baby on a plane next month
She will be just shy of 16 months old. I'm thinking of buying her some small gifts to pull out as the trip goes on to keep her entertained.
Ideas?
Re: I'm taking my baby on a plane next month
New toys are good but also make sure you have a change of clothes for both of you in your carry on. We got puked on on the first leg of a trip to Hawaii, which made for a very long day because we had clothes for her but not for us.
Bring your own snacks and a sippy cup too.
I just read this and added it to my list as well as ziplocs or a wet bag for the dirty clothes.
I've never traveled via plane with a toddler before so I'm making a list and checking it twice.
I got one of these ( http://www.amazon.com/Childress-Ultimate-Seat-Travel-Black/dp/B0009RNXNA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325021749&sr=8-1 ) for our carseat and as ridiculous as I felt, it made things so much easier when I was traveling alone. I used it and checked the carseat at the counter, and then I gate checked the stroller.
I suggest biting the bullet and paying to check a bag. The lighter you can travel up and through security the better with a toddler.
I was just looking at that.
We are going to gate check her carseat unless there is an empty seat on the plane which would allow us to have her actually sit in it.
I'm on the hunt for a cheap umbrella stroller just to use for the trip.
Thank you sooo much for your advice. Noted in my spreadsheet
No problem at all. I'm not on that much so feel free to email me if you have any other questions. We've taken our 19 month old on several trips, including the long one to Hawaii, and we've got it pretty down pat. My email is melissainabq at gmail.
Overall the best piece of advice I can offer is to give yourself plenty of time and check as much of your stuff as you can.
Ice, stickers, and water. Check. Check. Check.
We don't have an IPad but I'm taking my laptop.
Keep the ideas coming. I'm making a list.
We fly often with our kids (we just did an overseas flight and another one is coming up on Monday) and I would say the most important thing is to bring more diapers/wipes/food than you think you need. A change of clothes for both of you (I always bring just an extra shirt for me). New toys - bandaids are great for sticking because they come off easily. Lollipops. Snacks you wouldn't normally give them. I personally wouldn't use the car seat on the plane if there is a seat but would get a CARES harness, the car seat puts them at just the right angle and height to kick the seat in front of them.
Finally, ignore any looks you get from people. They were all babies once too, and you will never see them again. As long as you try to keep your baby happy and busy and not screaming no one should care!
We've flown with DS 3 times and he's done great. Snacks are a BIG thing, along with a nuk(if they still use one) for take off/landing or a bottle/sippy cup. We brought toys and he wasn't really interested, however, he did like watching a movie on the Ipad. I also suggest checking(not at the gate) your carseat - we always buy DS a seat and opt not to bring the carseat on; it's too big and some airlines will make you put them in the window seat which makes for a tight fit for the other two seats. The do have harnesses you can but to use on planes, but DS did just fine seatbelted in his own seat for the 3.5 hour flight.
**I guess we're extra lucky, the only back-up clothes we bring on the plane are an extra shirt for DS and have never needed anything else(when he was a newborn we did include an extra outfit for him). We also bring a ton of diapers/wipes though along with his favorite blankie.
**We typically fly Delta and are allowed 2 infant items(carseat and PNP), we then gate-check his stroller.
I'd actually recommend two changes of clothes for your daughter. Ours puked on DH twice during a trip last week (with a 3 hour layover in between). If you don't bring extra baby wipes, make sure you have some tissues or some kind of towel in case you need to clean up after an accident.
DD is easily entertained by flipping through the in-flight magazines, but you could bring some toys for your daughter if she likes playing with those.
The TSA will allow you to bring milk, but they will not allow you to take a somewhat melted ice pack through. As long as your ice is in a solid state, you're ok. I'd bring some extra ziplocs so you can go to a vendor and get some ice to keep milk or other beverages cold.
