Help me with my New Year's day party menu...

We're having four other families over for a New Year's day football watching party.  Party starts at 1.  In the invite, I asked everyone to bring an appetizer to share.  B/c of this, I'm having a hard time figuring out how much/what food to provide.

So far I know I'm doing peanut butter balls for the kids and will have bowls of trail mix and pistachios out (these have already been purchased).  What else should I do?  Brownies, maybe?  Chips and salsa?  Crack dip?  Cheese and crackers? Veggie tray?  I have no idea what anyone else is bringing, so that doesn't help me narrow it down, either.

I know this shouldn't be so hard, but I'm really struggling.

Re: Help me with my New Year's day party menu...

  • how long is the party?  I know that from 1-4 isn't usually a meal time, but I would make an appetizer that is substantial.  maybe meatballs in a crock pot or those little smokies - my friend makes a pizza roll that is great (just buy pillbury pizza dough, layer mozz cheese and pepperoni with sauce - roll up and bake)

maybe have some things in the house that are easy to pull out just in case you need a filler like the chips and salsa or veggies that you know you will eat another day if you don't need it.

what about some fruit - super easy for the kids to snack on as well as adults.

  • What about doing something on the lighter side? I love making fruit salsa and serving it with cinnamon sugar pita chips. It's really kid friendly & fresh, especially if everyone else brings heavy stuff, and could totally work as a dessert. I can send you my recipe if you want. I tend to over-feed at parties, so I'd probably have chips & salsa on hand just in case we needed them, and maybe do a veggie tray with hummus?

  • I would personally make a pot of soup or chili. That way, you know it's different from what the other people are making, is on the lighter side, and is pretty easy and can just sit on the stove the whole time.

eta- or crock pot meatballs. Probably something warm since your guests will likely just be bringing cold apps.

  • Since your party is at lunchtime, I was also going to suggest crockpot meatballs.

  • I agree I would expect the host to provide something warm or a bit heartier, the crockpot meatballs is a good idea. You could have some small rolls on hand it people want to eat them as sliders.

I would also have other snacks that you could pull out of the cupboard or freezer depending on what your guests bring, like chips and queso, frozen mini quiches.

  • I saw Rachel Ray make this the other day...

It looked really good and easy.
