Guthrie

H and I are setting up some appointments to look at a few houses in Guthrie. Do any of you know anyone who lives there?

H has always dreamt of living in a small town, but I'm apprehensive. I grew up in a super small town, and swore I'd never live in one as an adult. Guthrie isn't TOO far from OKC, so I think it might be doable. I've heard the schools are great, but then I'd also heard there is/was a gang problem? Just curious if anyone here has any firsthand knowledge of the place.

TIA!

Re: Guthrie

  • The drove alone from Guthrie to downtown OKC for work would be enough for me to exercise my right to veto this idea.

Yeah... I think it'd be about a 30-40-minute commute. I'm apprehensive, but still considering it. I don't think I'd hate the drive (I actually enjoy driving), but I would hate waking up 30 minutes earlier. Not sure if it's a deal breaker, yet.

  • I haven't heard anything about gangs, but I have heard that it is a hotbed of drug activity (meth in particular, I believe).  I'm sure it largely depends on what part of town you are in.

Ditto. I didn't know you (McGill) worked downtown...that would be too far of a commute for me personally.

  • We actually looked at a few homes in Guthrie back when DH worked there. The major problems we had were, 1., we weren't happy with the schools. We would have sent a child to a private school if we had lived there, which would have meant more driving and 2.,many of  the neighborhoods were wierd. While there were a couple of nice ones, there were many in which a gorgeous old Victorian was located next door to a falling down shack.
  • Ditto the meth and the long commute.  VETO!
  • Really? Meth? I guess that explains why big homes in Guthrie are so affordable. :-/

  • Your commute would probably be similar to mine, 45 minutes. But you'd be going with traffic instead of against it. And I've seen some bad traffic on 35 South. I hate the commute. That said, I could live in Guthrie and get rid of that commute and save myself a ton of time and money, and I still won't do it. Guthrie is gross.
