WWSND? (RE Renters Insurance)

About a year ago my dog dug a small hole (about 2"x2") in the corner of carpet by our bedroom door.  Then-FI told me he would take care of it, since I was way too busy doing wedding planning stuff.  Well, he never did, and we plan on moving out of our apartment at the end of January, so this needs to get resolved now.

We have rental insurance through State Farm, but we haven't submitted a claim with them yet.  Can someone explain what we should tell our agent, or what to look for on our policy plan as far as coverage goes?

  • What's your deductible?

Have you gotten estimates on what it would take to patch/replace the carpet? Can it be matched?  (Are you sure fixing it will cost more than your deductible?)

  • I would find out how much it would cost to replace and go from there. My last apartment it only cost 500 dollars to do the whole apartment (600) sq ft.

  • I didn't think renter's insurance covered self-done damages (including those by pets), but I didn't pay much attention to the policy I had back in the day. It was more for your things (I thought) if they were damaged by things that happened in the apartment; like if there was a fire and the sprinkler system destroyed your belongings?

    But I am not sure.

  • Thanks for all your input ladies!  I plan on going over the policy this weekend, and try to figure out what to do.  We had to get this specific policy when we got our dog, per our leasing office's pet rules, and I was under the impression that it was to cover the apartment structure if our lil' beastie tore the whole place apart :)  But I shall see...

  • Think you have a cheek ... you damaged this carpet by your dog, it is not possible to repair it, it has to be replaced - less fair wear and tear of course.
