rag quilt question

I was thinking of making a rag quilt from my stash of flannel fabric scraps. I've read I can use either flannel or batting for the filling, and I'm just wondering if one is better than the other.

Have you made one? Is one filler warmer than the other? Easier to work with?

 TIA.

Re: rag quilt question

  • I used flannel because I made all my layers the same size and ragged them all. I know some tutorials show you making the middle a little smaller.I just like the fullness of ragging all three, and it was quicker to sew, because you skipped a step.

  • Thanks. I'll give it a shot.

  • I just did a double layer of flannel the same size and ragged it.  It was very cozy and warm.
  • I used batting in the couple I did recently (still need to take a pic!). They are pretty thick though, and I don't think I would have been able to do it on my small old machine, but my new machine was great with it :) I cut the batting 1inch smaller (0.5in "seam allowance" for the rag on the flannel). One quilt I used flannel one side, cotton on the other. The other quilt was flannel on both.

I didn't think of just using 3 layers of flannel... that would have made a more suitable blanket for Houston... the ones I made will probably end up as floor play quilts! Would be good if we ever head back to Canada though!
