fighting to get through "Tree of Life"
This movie is admirable in the way that Oscar contenders sometimes are, but totally boring. Should I struggle through to the end or give up? I already read a spoiler, so I know what happens at the end.
I got this a week ago and can't seem to watch more than 20 minutes at a time. Pitt and Chastain are good actors, but I can't get into it. I liked the "history of the cosmos" part the best.
I'm hoping for better results with Midnight in Paris, which I am watching on Tuesday.

ORGAN DONOR: DEAL WITH IT. :-) :-)
Re: fighting to get through "Tree of Life"
By the way, why is Midnight in Paris pg-13? Have any of you watched it? I want to watch it with my daughter in the house but don't know if I can have it in our living room, or if I should retreat to the basement. She's 11.
eta: Never mind. I read a "family-friendly review" that gave it a B and said that it was ok for teens and up, that there was a little bit of language but not a lot. If you disagree, let me know. She's not watching it with me; I just want to be able to have it on the main screen without worrying about something horrible.
I watched MIP last night and I really enjoyed it. I think it's fine for your kid to watch.
The city is so beautiful in the film, makes me want to visit again.

Tree of Life was one on our short list last night, but it seemed like it would be slow/heavy and we were both kind of tired so we went with Super 8 instead (which we both liked, DH more than me).
Midnight in Paris should be fine for your daughter. But unless she's exceptionally well-read for an 11-year-old, you'll probably have to explain a lot of the literary references for her to appreciate the humor.

lol - I loved Tree of Life.
If you're not feeling it after the first 15 minutes you might as well stop watching. Especially if you saw the cosmos section. It's basically just more of the same.
Midnight in Paris was a really pretty movie as well - made Paris look amazing.
I did give up on Tree of Life and sent it back. I know that I can get it out again if I ever feel compelled to watch it, which is doubtful. I thought it was beautifully shot but boring as heck, and I've had enough punishment being a middle school teacher. I want to ENJOY my break. :-) I had to work too hard just to watch the little bit of it that I did. Sorry, insominac. I tried.
She's not going to watch the movie Midnight in Paris; I just wondered if it was ok to have it on while she's around the living room doing other things. I don't think she'd have any interest in the plot.
lol - it's okay.
I think part of the reason why I enjoyed it was because I was sort of sleepy and watching it in a movie theater and love classical music. The whole movie was so dreamlike - it was totally fitting for my state of mind. lol It was so amazing to hear Brahms, Bach, Mahler, and Gorecki in stereo and accompanied by such beautiful images. I tried really hard to see the movie again in the theaters because I'm pretty sure that it's not going to be the same experience when I see it at home.
eta: It was like watching Fantasia for grownups. Plot was unnecessary. lol
Oh yes, you did say that in your comment. I missed that. Yes, totally fine.

lol People were definitely walking out of the theater when I saw it.
I didn't care too much for LA Confidential and I hated Precious and don't get me started on how shitastic Traffic beat out one of my most favorite movies (Brokeback Mountain) - but I liked No Country a lot.
Traffic didn't beat out Brokeback Mountain. Crash did. I preferred Crash. I saw the nominated Best Picture contenders that year and felt that BM was the worst. I think I'd rank them Crash, Capote, Munich, Good Night and Good Luck, then Brokeback. It was too glacially paced, and my progressive friend concurred. It was all politics that drove that one toward the finish line.
Jack Nicholson reading that result is one of my favorite recent Oscar moments. Proulx was such a b___ about it, too.
Really? The Aristocrats is the only movie I've ever seen get a warning and it deserved it!
MIP was excellent and agree it wasn't too scandalous.
We'll have to see if we can Red Box ToL. My goal is to watch all best picture nominees again and as many other nominees as possible this year. If I could also just get through best actor and actress and go to an afternoon of some sort of shorts (local theatre usually does a few categories) I would feel good. But I need to try to get a head start with some guesses for nominees.
So far of the probable nominees for best actor I've only seen DiCaprio in J. Edgar and Pitt in Moneyball. I will probably see The Descendants and The Artist on video. I don't know if I will ever see Shame.
Likely actors: Clooney, DuJardin, DiCaprio, Fassbender, Pitt (possible--Oldman)
Likely actresses: Davis, Streep, Close, Williams, Mara/Theron/Swinton/Olsen (slight edge to Swinton)
Best Pic: This is hard because the films have to garner 5% of #1 votes. Hugo, The Artist, The Descendants, War Horse, The Help, Tree of Life
I really want to see My Week with Marilyn.
I saw The Artist Sunday and it was delightful! Highly recommend it. I drug DH and he loved it too.
I think I'm going to see The Descendants and My Week with Marilyn shortly. Maybe a double feature again (we also did Young Adult Sunday) since they are at the same theatre here.
Hurray good movies!
I can't wait to see My Week with Marilyn. Michael Medved said that the Artist was delightful, too. It was his top pick of the year.
I liked Midnight in Paris.
