Girls who've read A Discovery of Witches
I have 100 or so pages to go (so no spoilers) I just want to talk about this now.
I adore this, just beyond in love with the book. I can not imagine becoming disappointed between now and the end, aside from the fact that the sequel isn't in my hot little hands.
Harkness' story telling itself is magical, this picture she paints of the world Diana and Matthew live in makes it seem so possible in our own world.
It's intelligent, well researched writing, and so much more than a simple supernatural romance. This is the kind of story Twilight wished it was. Where characters stand tall on their own, and learn it's right to be who you were born to be.
While we all know that I snorted the Twi-crack, it makes me sad to think that this is being called "adult" twilight. Nothing is the same, aside from the vampire aspect, in which case you could identify them all as being the "same": ridiculously handsome, seductive, cold to the touch, secretive and possesive.
The writing is there, the plot is there, and the characters are adults in an adult setting. Diana is likeable and strong on her own and Matthew is educated and mysteriously charming but together they are even better.
When I read the part about the bed time stories it all came together for me and I knew this would be my favorite read this year.
Le sigh. Thanks for the rec's ladies!

Re: Girls who've read A Discovery of Witches
Oooohhhhh. I may have to read this next. If I can ever finish my overdue library book that somehow mercifully remains on my Nook.
I think you would also like the Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. (Or really any of Kelley Armstrong's books.) I have most of them on my Nook, purchased from B&N but I'm not sure how to share them.
Ooo, you're getting to the good stuff. It was a slow read up to 100 pages for me then pages 100 - 250 were amazing. Then it's been just as good from there.
Discuss when you're finished.
And the release date looks like July 10. Happy birthday to me!

Ditto! It may have to be my next book.

Like the BSC ending? Put me in mind of Breaking Dawn - I can't think of a third ...
Vampire, BSC ending, pregnancy maybe??
MORE SPOILERS
The sneaking in her rooms while she slept, I have to bite her so she will live, and we can't do the sex or you'll have my vamp spawn.
I can't say I blame Diana though because I totally wanted a deClairmont fetus by the end.
Amen sister!
I have to remind myself though that Twilight was for YA - - so I can live with the fade to black. DoW was very tasteful but still wet your whistle just enough, I like.
And I see the similarities now that you point them out, but I certainly wasn't reading with a fine tooth comb going, "OMG, Stephenie Meyer already did this" - - which is some of the reaction I saw in reviews for DoW.
I read some of those reviews before reading so I guess that's why I noticed. It didn't ruin the book for me though and I still felt like I read a completely different story. Have you read the Vampire Academy series? It's YA but does a lot better job of addressing sex IMO.
No, and I think they are on my "free" lists.
Honestly I really didn't think I was into sci-fi ... but lately it seems that's all I've enjoyed reading.
