Caribbean Vacation

We'd like to do a vacation to an island but prefer it to have nonstop flights from Atlanta. The options we've found so far in our price range are St. Thomas, Aruba, and Montego Bay. I've visited the first two on cruises but I'm looking to hear from some people that have vacationed in these places as a destination. What did you think? Was the water pretty clear and the beach non-rocky? Also, I could use recs on hotels. Thanks!

Re: Caribbean Vacation

  • What about St. Marteen?
  • I would fly to St. Thomas and take the short boat trip to St. John.

    Check out Caneel bay...so lovely!

The Westin is also a nice option but Caneel bay has 7 beaches on the property.

St. John has endless beautiful beaches--rent a jeep one day and explore the island.

  • How about Punta Cana?

We did Punta Cana a couple of years ago so we wanted to try something different.

  • so you're only looking for montego bay recs is that it?

Ditto! I love St. John. Perfect place for beautiful beaches and relaxation.

no, i'm looking for recs in aruba and st.thomas as well. we're open to other islands. we just didn't find direct flights to the other places that we came up with but i'm sure there are some that didn't come to mind.

  • ah then yes-fly to st thomas, get ferry to any of the other usvi or bvi. google usvi ferry schedule.

aruba and st thomas are my least favorite islands.

  • Aruba had beautiful, gorgeous beaches.  (Do a google image search of Aruba Palm Beach.)  Water was so clear - the snorkling was great.  We had one of the high rise hotels (it was called the Wyndham 5 years ago) with a pool right by the beach, so we would go back and forth depending how close we wanted to be to the bar.  :)  Fun things to do were - snorkling tour out to a sunken ship, Jeep  tour of the island (included Jeep races across the sand dunes!), parasailing, bird sanctuary, shopping in Oranjestad, and a sunset booze cruise on a huge sailing ship.
  • What about Cancun? Direct from ATL. You can drive to Playa del Carmen or Tulum in a couple of hours.
  • Delta has direct flights to St Lucia - at least they did summer of 2010 when we went.

  • Delta also flies to Turks and Caicos (PLS) nonstop from ATL. Pricey island though.
  • Outside of flying in to MoBay I wouldn't choose to spend anymore time there.  I HIGHLY recommend Negril, which is about an 1.5-2 hour drive and well worth it!  We're staying at the Rockhouse in Negril in a few weeks - I can't wait!  This time I'm actually excited for the drive since we have a private driver and he can show us the sites and not be stuck on a big ol' bus with a bunch of strangers.

FYI - The Rockhouse is on the cliffs of Negril, but there are several hotels (AI and non) on the beach also.

  • We like to go to Aruba.  We prefer the low rise section (Eagle Beach) over Palm Beach because there is more room on the beach.  Bucuti is our preferred hotel.  Beach is huge and gorgeous.  Water is clear.  Lots to do on the island if you want, or you can just relax on the beach.  We rent a jeep when we go, and the island is easy to get around.  Lots of good restaurants too.

I agree.  I would fly to MoBay, but take the drive to Negril.  I had dinner at Rockhouse and it is beautiful, but we actually stayed at a place called Tensing Pen, which is maybe 20 minutes from Rockhouse off of the cliffs.  It is beautiful and extremely affordable.  Food was great as was service and the cottages.  It's also very close to Ricks Cafe which is a lot of fun.
