? For BWLO

When Elizabeth woke up for the early morning feeding her right eye was crusted with goop. At the next feeding 4 hours later it wasn't golly, but the eye is watering some. How long would you wait before you call the dr?

Re: ? For BWLO

  • Sawyer had one goopy eye until he was almost 5 months old.  It was from a clogged tear duct that eventually opened on its own, and his doctor wasn't concerned about it at all, and said they wouldn't even consider a procedure to clear the duct until he was as least a year old.  It was always goopy and sometimes yellowish, and a lot of times in the morning it was completely crusted over (so gross).  It started when he was a couple of weeks old, and it never seemed to bother him.  It was annoying & we had to wipe it constantly to stop it from crusting, but apparently it's really common.

If you're concerned that it might be something different, I would call just to put your mind at ease since it's always better safe than sorry.  In the meantime, massaging the inner corner of the eye with a warm, wet washcloth compress can help to open the duct, but it might just be something that will take time to open on its own.  Here is some more info:

  • I agree with Emma. Jack had the same thing for several weeks. The dr told me to massage his tear duct everyday and to wipe his eye with a warm, wet washcloth.

  • Agree with the others! Tessa had it for about a month. I tried to massage it as often as I could remember and it eventually cleared up on its own.

  • I had totally forgotten about this until you mentioned it, but Nora had this, too. Like the others said, it was a clogged tear duct. Hers did end up getting infected at one point--I think she was like 3 weeks old--and we had to use antibiotic ointment for a few days. But otherwise, the goop was completely normal and we were just told to keep wiping it away and massaging the duct. It did go away on its own.
  • Thanks for all the replies!  I wasn't too worried about it yet, but just wanted to check.  I feel like I have a tendency to downplay things because I don't want to be "that' mom that calls the dr for everything!

  • Are yo ustill producing any breastmilk? If so, try squeezing some breastmilk in her eye -- it works wonders for clogged tear ducts!
