Kindle Fire users, talk to me
DS2 has a bunch of Christmas money, and wants a Kindle Fire.
Do you like it? Are they user friendly?
I've been reading mixed reviews on Amazon, and am not sure I fully support this for him. He's played with one and liked it, and I told him it's ultimately his decision, but wonder if he should consider other options.

He's 11 (6th grade) and pretty techno-savvy. Does all sorts of video games, robotics, etc.
He's a big reader (and writer) and wants it mostly for books & movies.
It sounds like there will be other costs later - downloading books & movies though.

Yep, there are other costs later. For movies, you can get a bunch free if you have a prime membership but you'll always have to pay for the more popular movies/shows. A prime membership is $80 per year. If you have a netflix or hulu plus membership, both of those are available on kindle.
For books, if you have a prime membership you can borrow 1 per month from amazon for free. You can also check out books from the library (free) or buy books (usually $5-10 per book)
They also have an app store with a lot of free apps, but also lots of paid apps

I like mine. So far, I have only put free apps on it and the library has a growing selection of kindle books so I plan to just read those. I am still in the club that, if I am going to buy a book, it's going to be an actual book.

2014 Reading Goal: 85
I returned mine but I wanted it for more than books and movies. For those things, I thought it was great and had the extra bonus of web surfing and getting email, playing some games, etc. Part of the thing I didn't like was that I couldn't get it dim enough. I have trouble sleeping in the middle of the night sometimes and like to read till I fall back asleep and it was just a tad too light, (my phone is better) and since I already had a regular Kindle, I just didn't need it plus my dh decided I should have an Ipad.
I watched Netflix on it though and thought that was great. I did read quite a bit too but I read a ton anyway.
