Important poll for grapefruit eaters

rrr and I have been splitting a fresh grapefruit off our trees every morning. His dad also eats grapefruit every day, and in their house they have a grapefruit knife. I had never seen a grapefruit knife before going to his parents' house. We don't have a grapefruit knife (or grapefruit spoon), but rrr cuts each section before he gets his spoon to eat it.

I, on the other hand, dig straight in with a regular spoon.

When you compare our eaten fruit, mine is clearly more efficiently eaten. I told rrr this and he said "well, I am more civilized because I use special tools." I told him I follow the Alton Brown philosophy that it's better to use tools that have many purposes.

Re: Important poll for grapefruit eaters

  • I peel and eat mine like an orange.

  • I dig in like you do.

Love the title.  Thought this was going to be about some salmonella outbreak or something since it was marked "important." ha!

  • We received grapefruit spoons as a wedding gift (no I didn't register for them).  Since we have them I use them.  However, I still feel the need to cut along the sections.  They seem to get stuck and the spoons are really small and kind of scary looking.
  • I voted yes, even though we don't eat grapefruit by itself.  We do have a set of grapefruit spoons.  They were a wedding gift without a name or card attached.  My parents have always had grapefruit spoons.  They were probably the ones that gave them to us!

  • I do not use a special tool, but I do cut along the edges.

  • We have a grapefruit knife. I cut it in half with a regular knife, cut the segments and outer edge with the grapefruit knife and eat it with a regular spoon.

My parents had knife and spoon sets when I was growing up that we used.

  • I do not cut,and use a regular spoon.  When at my mom's house, I use one of the smaller long handled baby spoons she has from when we were little.

What is a grapefruit knife, and pray tell, a grapefruit spoon?  I freaking love grapefruit.  I have often thought there should be a special grapefruit eating tool!

  • I have a grapefruit knife, but I would like to get a grapefruit spoon. The knife doesn't really make too much of a difference to me.

A grapefruit knife is a serrated knife with a little bend at the tip. A grapefruit spoon is like a spork, it's serrated . Instead of a spoon and a fork, it's the love child of a spoon and a knife.

  • There should be more sporks in the world.  They are awesome.

My mom has 2 grapefruit spoons; I should steal one from her. lol  At home, I use a regular spoon and dig in or just peel it like an orange.

  • I have grapefruit spoons but still cut along the edges first. After I eat it I squeeze any remaining juice out and drink it.

Me, too. I started doing this after realizing no matter which of the other techniques (discussed here) I used, too much pulp was going to waste.

  • I don't eat grapefruit but we do have grapefruit spoons because that is what my parents used and my husband loves grapefruit.  He used to eat his grapefruit with the grapefruit spoon until he went on medication that prevents him from being able to eat grapefruit.  It was a sad day in our house when he learned he couldnt have grapefruit/grapefruit juice anymore.
