*Naylon*--NYC hotel suggestions?
I'm starting to seriously think about heading to NYC for DH's bday. I just can't justify the $400+ a night they want for a room at Foxwoods/Mohegan. Are there any hotels you'd recommend? Living where you do I'm sure you haven't spent a lot of time in the city's hotels....I know I'm useless with Boston hotel recs.....but any suggestions would be appreciated. Any time I've been to NYC it's just been a day trip, so I know nothing about any of the hotels. Thanks!

I'm hoping to not spend more than $250/night for the hotel. I'm not really sure what we'll do. DH hasn't ever spent any time in NYC, so walking around Times Square will be a must. I'm also looking into possible wine tasting/food pairing classes, but there are so many to choose from, I probably would pick one based on location once I had the hotel booked.
We do have AAA. Thanks for the suggestion!
I'm going to NYC end of January. I signed up for alerts on DealBase.com and ended up getting a 4 star room for $99 a night. I recommend trying this.
We are staying in midotown (3 blocks from Central Park). We want to "see it all" so we figured wherever we stay, we will be walking...or cabbing.
I just checked the rates and for the dates we'll be going, it's $242/night before taxes and fees and such. Not bad for what appears to be a great hotel in a great location. I'm going to do some more looking before I book anything, but thanks again for the suggestion!
P.S. The fact that we can stay in a 4 star hotel in Times Square for about 1/2 the price of staying in or near the casinos in CT boggles my mind. haha
That's about what we paid. It was very nice and right in the middle of everything.
And since they had 48-72 hour cancellation policy I re-booked once and locked in a lower rate the second time I booked and then cancelled the first reservation.
I just looked on hotels.com and for those dates (I guessed one weekend during that time) you have lots and lots of choices for under $250. I'd just stick with a central location and a place with many good reviews. Also, throw it into Google Maps first and make sure you're decently close to a subway - you will want to be!
Ex: The Sofitel NY on West 44th is averages $215/night and has amazing reviews
High end of your budget but
The Muse Hotel, a Kimpton Hotel
this used to be a hotel my company used (we used to be right near Times Square) and my Sister (travel agent) has stayed here and gave it great reviews. I think it said it averaged $247/night for those dates.
I've stayed at a different Sheraton - but saw this one for a very reasonable $149

Thanks! I'll check those out. My plan is to drive in early on Saturday, possibly do a wine tasting/wine class in the early afternoon, check into the hotel, then do some walking around and go to dinner. Then we'd check out on Sunday, do some more walking around, go to lunch, and then head home.

Are you planning to see a show? If you aren't picky you can go to the TKTS booth in Times Square the day off and get very discounted seats.
My sister visited w/ her daughter in the Spring for her Sweet 16 and I sent them on this thing called "The Ride" which I'd seen but never done. She said it was fun.
I usually stay at the Westin NY or the W Time's Square - but we get a corporate rate so I'm not sure what the normal rate is. My clients also gave me a list of boutique style hotels they recommend - not sure rates on these either - but a few more options to check out.
