cream colored walls.. and other issues

so my apartments have always had white walls.. my recent move put us into a sort of 'updated' place with cream walls.. my cream/white/green decor has worked well with this.

BUT, here's my problem. I have black furniture in our room.. cream and black everything really.. i decided i needed some color in my life. i bought a grey and white duvet cover.. i'm not saying grey is color but its different from what i have.. anyway, it looks HORRIBLE with the wall color. i want to cover it with some sort of blanket, maybe a teal or purple of some sort.. but grey is def not a good match with these walls.. so aside from my bedroom dilemma, i now have a bathroom one.

if i do teal in my room, i can't do that in my bathroom... right? shamefully my house is seriously black/white/green/or teal.. i don't deviate.. can i do a blue? i am just worried that everything will look bad with these weird cream colored walls.

and i still have nothing over our couch.. we have a mirror over the fireplace, and i have a bunch of frames and now 4 shelves to put somewhere and i can't decide what to do. (i originally wanted a photo cluster over the couch but you guys vetoed that..)

so. there it is. what would you do?

Re: cream colored walls.. and other issues

  • I don't know if I have advice for all of it, but I can speak about the bedroom/bathroom.  I think master bedrooms and bathrooms should match.  If you paint the bedroom teal, I would do teal accents in the bathroom (but not paint the walls, that's a little much).

Maybe some inspiration for the couch situation:

  • ooo, i like the pictures that you posted!!! thank you! gives me some good ideas. :)

if i have cream colored shag type carpet and tan/cream walls and tan cream couch.. i know its effing boring.. what color rug would you do? something with color? or another neutral but not the same?

  • one more question, if i have only one bathroom and it isn't necessarily considered the master, or is it.. but we have 2 bedrooms.. should i do the same type of thing in both?

I would do something with a color and probably a pattern, maybe something like the last picture - so a green rug for example with a cream pattern in it (but the total amount of cream is minimal), like this for example:

I had a friend with a small apartment, lots of cream walls, couch etc.  She had an accent chair that I think was a burnt orange/red and then used the burnt orange, red, yellow theme - so a throw on the couch, a painting etc.  Not a ton, but it was really pretty.

in that case I would do a different color scheme.  Like your bedroom could be teal, the bathroom be green and then do the other bedroom in something complimentary, but different from either of those.  But then have all of those colors be in the same family, if that makes sense.  I have friends who live in a house and went with all bright and/or primary colors.  Or you could have all the colors be more calm/smokey.

  • i am digging the pics that you've posted so much!

i just feel like this apartment isn't as 'homey' or comfortable as others.. partly because of what i've picked.. but also because there is a BARE wall above the couch.. but i think i can take some of these ideas and run! :) YAY!

  • yay!  what about doing an accent wall in the living room and having that go with the rug?  all of our apartment is cream (carpet and walls) and we did an accent wall (were only allowed to paint one wall) and it completely changes the feel.  It suddenly makes it look all impressive and homey without a lot of work!
  • I will probably be flamed but....I like the photo idea or get a painting or something and extract colors from that for accents.

Also if you have more than one bathroom don't be boring have fun with different themes/colors.

  • we decided to get an aqua-ish color for the bathroom. i picked a white shower curtain.. the same version as the green one we currently have. still trying to decide on final living room wall but getting closer! thanks guys!
