I feel like crap!

I need to vent for a minute.  I seriously feel like a piece of $hit right now.  I'll try to make this a short story.  A co-worker was bit and clawed by her cat night before last.  I told her she should go to our clinic and get an antibiotic because her hand was really swollen and red today.  Apparently when you are bit by an animal the doctor has to report it.  Well the doctor reported it to animal control and now animal control is taking her cat from her for 10 days.  I was concerned about her hand/arm and now I feel awful for telling her to go see the doctor.

Back story on the cat.... She's had him almost 3 years and he's been acting out for the past 2 weeks.  There has been a stray cat on her porch that is making him act out.  He's been attacking her other cat and her.  She's tried everything to keep the stray away and keep her cat calm and nothing has worked yet.

Sorry... I guess I just needed to type this out.  I really feel awful that I urged her to go and now he's being taken from her.  I feel like I'm the one to blame.

Re: I feel like crap!

  • Bummer! If her can't isn't dangerous, then he'll be back home in no time. You aren't a jerk. You were a concerned friend. She can't be mad at you for it. What would happen if you said nothing and then she got a huge infection?? I think you'd feel worse about not suggesting her to take care of it versus her taking care of it.

Keep your head up. I think you know you did the right thing.

  • Don't feel so terrible! I'm sure she's psst, but she'll get over it. She coud have caught an infection from the cat, which could have turned spetic, and could have become a lot worse than a swollen hand. I'd have done the same thing. Most states have that rule that your doctor has to report the animal, and most of the time, the owner gets the pet back quickly. Animals may be domesticated, but they're still animals. They act out, and can be unpredictable.

Aside from that, there's a possibility that there is something wrong with the cat. I don't mean like rabies or psychotic, but it could have epilepsy or a tumor that is making him act strange, and the stray is just stressing him further. You could potentially save a kitty life too

  • You absolutely did the right thing. My friend's dad got bitten by their cat during hurricane Katrina. He ended up with a raging infection - in the hospital - it was BAD. The doctor said he could have easily died from that if he hadn't gone in.

I didn't know about the pet being taken away thing either, but I'm sure she'll get him back really soon. Plus maybe with that cat maybe the stray will go away or she can call animal control in the meatime and get him picked up.

  • Thanks ladies.  It didn't seem like she was mad at me, but I saw it as being my fault.  She chose to have him quarantined at a vets office, which is going to cost her like $20 a day.  He hasn't had any shots since she's had him so he has to have an exam and shots before she can have him back.

lol... I really just didn't want her hand to fall off and now all this.

  • Don't feel bad.  She needed to see a doctor because cat bites and scratches can be dangerous.  I would rather her lose her cat (which is doubtful) than to lose her hand or end up with a horrible infection and be hospitalized.

Even more of a reason that it's a good thing you had her go to the doctor! And it got him to one as well.

  • Cat bites are one of the worse animal bites you can get. Its not your fault. You'd feel worse if you didn't speak up and she ended up critically ill from it.

  • oh gosh i know how you feel but honestly cat bites of any kind are to be taken extremely seriously. they have so much bacteria in their mouths and any sort of swelling indicates a problem. there is very real danger of amputation so you did the right thing. and the bottom line is you had absolutely no idea that would be the outcome.
Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.
  • now that i read the other responses i wanted to add that i dont know the law in your state but it probably gotten taken away because it wasnt up to date on its rabies vax. if it had been she could have probably shown them the cert. and that would have been that. also it's likely it would have been the same outcome because her hand would have swelled more and she would have realized it was time to go to the doctor. so maybe you speeded up the inevitable.

  • Thanks again for making me feel better.  I will see her again at work tomorrow so hopefully the weekend wasn't too bad for her.

Maryland... Yes, I believe you're right about him being taken because he wasn't vaccinated.  Someone told me their dog bit someone but they could "quarantine" him at home since he had records of his shots.
