Have I mentioned my brain is a mess this week? I'm making a separate post in case no one checks back in with my post below.
Let me make sure I have this all right- I should order my calling package first to see if I get offered a deal for an online number? Then I also order myself a wireless router handset/phone so I can answer calls when I'm not actually at my computer?
As far as the calling package goes, if I have a US assigned number, am I buying a package to call US & Canada, or should I just go with "world" (includes Europe) since I can also use this phone to make local calls in France? Or should I skip that? Does it matter that I have friends & family in Spain & Germany I'd like to call, too?
Am I complicating this too much? DH won't be home for hours and I need someone to bounce this all off of. THANKS!
Re: Another Skype question
Depending on your mobile phone type you may be able to answer your incoming Skype calls on your mobile which eliminates the need for a wireless router/hanset thingy. Our mobile is a smart phone and we have the skype app on it so that is the case here.
We've never used Skype to make outgoing calls so this is the part I may be wrong about, but this is my understanding. For outgoing calls they don't work like local calls just because you have a Skype number. There is still a (reasonably minimal) charge for making calls through Skype if you are calling a phone number no matter what country you are calling. If you, however, are calling from computer to computer it is free.
I'd go for the US/Canada subscription only, and get a subscription that doesn't cost much more than half of the online number.
The problem with the woldwide/euro subscriptions is that it usually only allows you to call land lines, and since everybody and their dog had a cell nowadays, the international one is useless. I think the US/Canada subscription is the only one that allows cell phones as well.
Buy your router and router-phone when you're in France. You might get a free router with your internet once you're there, and despite the fact that most of the router-phones are compatible with all routers, a usb phone might be more useful than one that uses ethernet/router. You'll be able to just deal with leaving your computer on a little more when you just get there and wait for a phone to be delivered to your home there.
Good luck!
