I know a 2 y/o who got a NEW iPad for Christmas

Remember that post just before Christmas where it said that on the top of most 8-12yo wish lists were iPad and iPhones. Well, here's an even better one for ya.

DH's boss is BSC, I knew this already, but she's re-proven it this Christmas. She has 3 kids, ages 2, 6 and 7. They already had an iPad at their house, maybe even 2, belonging to the parents. The kids got to play with it some times. Apparently they misbehaved/faught over it all the time, which to me spells 'ok, so you don't get to play with mommy/daddy's electronics anymore and go think about what you've done'.

Not BSC-boss though, she bought all 3 of her kids (yes, the 2yo as well) a brand new (most expensive version) iPad for Christmas. She actually admitted that the reason she gave for buying it was that her kids wouldn't let her use it anymore (uhm, this was a work-provided iPad, which she needs for uhm, work) and constantly fought with each other over it.

I think she deserves the most BSC person of the year award!

  • Eh, her money her choice. I don't think it makes her BSC as much as it makes her kids spoiled.

  • Yikes. Especially to not setting the boundary with her work equipment. May be her money and her choice, but this is what I was talking about regarding the parents teaching the kids to expect these items (vs deserving them).

  • Her money her choice.  I looked into getting Q a touch for Christmas.  I don't think he is spoiled either.
  • I agree that it is her money so she can decide how she spends it but I think it is crazy to buy young children, especially a 2 y/o an iPad. I mean if you give in to everything that they want, can you imagine how the kids are going to be in a few years?

I agree. I grew up without a cellphone but I can see why kids might need them today. However, I dont understand why parents spend so much money on buying the most expensive one. I would just buy the most basic one and if they want something better then they can save their money and buy it on their own.

  • I think you can give your children nice things and teach them to be polite nice and unspoiled.

I agree. But in this case she pretty much rewarded her kids for using her work equipment and arguing over it. Instead of teaching them something good she taught them to be annoying to get what they want.

  • I'm the person who posted in the 8-12 post that my ILs were annoyed with me and DH for telling them not to get DD an iPad for Christmas/Hanukkah. (We don't have iPads or iPhones ourselves, in case that matters.)

Apparently, your boss is in the majority mindset. Just about every friend of mine I told about the ILs/iPad thing couldn't understand why I wouldn't want DD to have her own iPad and thought I was being silly and, in one case, just plain "jealous" because I didn't want DD to get an iPad before I did (wtf?). I just don't see these as the end-all-be-all or as a "necessity" or even as an age-appropriate "toy," but  it seems that a lot of people do...

I wouldn't know my child is perfect.

And perfectly adorable. How'd he enjoy Christmas? BabyD was a huge fan of ripping off the wrapping paper.

  • I think it's crazy to get a two year old an ipad. Sorry, but really, what happened to letting kids be kids?

My niece and nephew's grandparents got them each an ipad for Christmas (they're six year old twins). I thought that was over the top too, but at least my niece and nephew don't act spoiled (although maybe I'm biased).

I went completely overboard.   We could have just got him one present and he would have been happy.  It took him all day to open his presents because he would open it then play with it for 30 minutes :)

Exactly! I might've thought it was cool if they'd gotten one to share, but this really is a reward for stealing their mom's stuff and fighting.

When I was a kid when we got cool stuff like that (the 1980's version of cool stuff, that is, like a computer) we'd get one for all of us and if we couldn't share/fought over it, it'd get unplugged and we couldn't use it at all for x amount of days/weeks.
