Fingers Crossed!!!

So I'm not sure if I told you all... BF and I decided it's best for us if I start looking fro jobs in the town 2 hours away... We will be apart for a little bit but it's better for us in the long run. I got a call for an interview today! I'm a little nervous because I don't know much about the job. It's an admin position, full time. It's through a hiring agency though. Is this something to be concerned about? No it's not a craigslist post and the agency is legit. Why do companies use agencies? Is there a good reason for it? I honestly don't know lol.

Re: Fingers Crossed!!!

  • Do you mean that if you were hired you'd be an employee of the agency working at the employer's site or do you mean that an agency is doing the hiring but the hired candidate will be directly employed by the employer? There are legit reasons either way, but the reasons are sometimes different, so I want to answer your question correctly.

  • They are doing the hiring and I would be employed by the employer... I think.... When I asked more about the job the lady told me I would have to talk to the "staffer" she is just scheduling the interviews...
  • There are a few reasons an employer might use a recruiter in a situation like that:

    • They are a small employer without a dedicated HR/Recruiting function so they don't have someone with the expertise to recruit. Or they do have someone but that person is too busy to handle the job posting.
    • The person who is doing the hiring doesn't know enough about the job they're hiring for and/or they don't have the proper connections to hire for a position. This generally wouldn't be the case for an admin position, but is more likely for something really specialized like software development.
    •  They made a deal with the Agency so that the Agency was hired for this job in exchange for something else. I once had a deal like this where I got a reduced rate to buy out a staff member of an agency in exchange for them getting to recruit for a certain type of position in the future. Another scenario is that the company may have bought out a temp employed by the Agency and the temp didn't work out and the contract now calls for the Agency to find someone else.
There are more reasons, of course, but those are a few legit ones.

  • Whew! Thanks for clarifying! I was kind of stressing that it might be sketchy or something because I had no clue... I've always been called, interviewed, and hired directly by the company I applied to work for so this is kind of new territory. Thanks so much!
  • ditto pp

Just be alarmed if they want you to give them any $ for anything (creating a portfolio for you, filing your paper work etc)
