Talk to me about the Springs. . .

So DH is applying for jobs in the Springs, and his grandma has a house there that we could live in (she's planning on moving in with MIL) for really cheap. Tell me the good, the bad and the ugly. . . if he gets a job down there, we're moving regardless (one of us needs a damn job!), but I'd like to be prepared and I know nothing about the city. It's still in the "maybe" stage, but I'm a planner :).

Re: Talk to me about the Springs. . .

  • I love the Springs and we really considered moving there a couple months before putting our house on the market.  S applied for a couple jobs down there.  I can't tell you all the ins and outs of living there, obviously, but we go down there from time to time since my parents have a vacation home up near woodland park.  We also have a few family friends down there.  I have to say I will be super sad if you guys move :-(. I hope, for you guys, that he gets the job because I know it's really stressful, but I'll miss you guys!
  • I lived down in COS for about 5 years while going to graduate school.  I LOVED it down there.  The nicer parts of town are definitely on the north end of town.  My dream location for a house in COS would be in the Rockrimmon area.  I really liked how close Pikes Peak was and their weather alway seemed a bit milder to me than Denver's (no proof of this, just my perception while I lived down there).  COS is a lot more conservative than Denver (this might bother some folks) but it felt pretty comfortable to me as I'm a military brat and the military presence in COS never really bothered me.

Sending juju for that job...hope he lands something asap!  You guys need a good start to 2012! :)

no identifiable siggy pictures anymore, thanks a lot stupid nest!
  • What part of town is gma's place?

  • I love living here.  Anything specific you want to know? I feel like we are lacking for good restaurants, but that's a pretty minor complaint.

  • Anything, really. I've been down there maybe twice, so have no experience with the area. Will my left leaning tendencies get me in trouble in a pretty conservative town? Is there lots to do with the kiddo? Gymnastics classes, good rec centers, stuff like that? Lack of restaurants is lame, but we can deal, we don't eat out near as much as we used to. Carrie, I'm not exactly sure where the house is. I think it on the north side of central Colorado springs, and on the west side of the highway. I've only been there'd once and it was like 5 years ago. It's an older house but not old, you know? Mid seventies, maybe? Not at all what we'd buy, but we'd only have to pay taxes & insurance, and that's tough to pass up.

I feel like I'm pretty left leaning and I've never felt out of place.  I still love it here :)  Heck, I breastfed walking around Target yesterday and barely got a second glance from my fellow shoppers.

There are definitely good restaurants, I just get bored.  I feel like the selection is kind of limited

I have trouble with finding gyms, but that's because of where I live specifically.  There is a good YMCA system as well as a couple mega gyms with children's programs and pools and the typical Gymboree, Little Gym, etc.  My favorites for the kiddo are the zoo and the North Pole.  North Pole is seriously awesome.  So is the zoo.  And, of course, there's hiking and that sort of thing as well

Hell, I get bored with the restaurants in Denver, so I'm sure that's everywhere :). Good to know there's lots of options - if he gets the job and we move down there, we really would be able to afford for me to stay at home (HUGE selling point for me), so we will have time to do fun stuff.

Grandma's house is off Garden of the Gods Road - any thoughts on the area? If it's a terrible place, tell me - it may sway our decision :)

That's the west side.  My favorite part of town.  Some south of GOG is slightly sketchy, but the north side of GOG is awesome

  • Meh, I'm not a fan of the Springs for the most part.

The politics thing is just too much for me. I feel like we lived in a nice area, had a nice home.. but our medians looked like jungles, half our street lights were off, police coverage is a joke. The roads are not the best and it is the worst public transit system I have seen. The city doesn't have money because no one wants to pay taxes, and why should they? It is a military city and a lot of the population will be cycled through in 5 years.

I'm also on the young side and hated the lack of night life/restaurants/things to do for a city of its size.

It's south, but barely - maybe half a mile? The neighborhood looks decent, just older (totally not what we are used to, our current neighborhood is cookie cutter central :)). Glad it's at least CLOSE to a good part of town, especially since DD & I will be on our own a lot if everything plays out.

This is all good to know too. We don't go out much, so no nightlife isn't a huge deal, but the police & infrastructure stuff is. Thanks!

  • I lived there from when I was 9 until I left for college and my mom still lives there. We love visiting her down there. She has a beautiful house on the south side. There are definitely nice areas on the south end, though most of the newer areas are to the north or out east by Powers. Usually we go out to eat downtown or go up to Briargate. The downtown is really cute. Yes it's conservative, but we go out to eat and shopping and stuff with my mom's gay friends and there's never been any issues at all. I think the worst part is the lack of good shopping, but there is Briargate (that wasn't there when I lived there) and Park Meadows isn't tooooo far.. I would live there again. :)

  • I grew up on the north end of town. I haven't lived there in a long time but it's still really nice. Lots of growth. My parents live down there so we visit often. It's beautiful. Before I got married, I worked in the tech center and lived in the springs and my commute was the same as DH who worked in the tech center and lived in Lakewood. I'd take distance over traffic any day!

  • I love living here. Larissa is right about restaurants but other than that I can't really complain.
  • I've been gone for almost 2 mos. And I miss it tons:( It sounds like gma's is in Holland Park, which is a fine neighborhood. DH and I wanted to buy there bc of its location but even the fixer uppers were pricey and hard to come by. There is a lack of restaurants, but if you look hard enough, you will find some favorites. I would be back in COS in a heartbeat if we had the chance to go back.

Ditto Andrea.  Sounds like Holland Park, which is a good place to live.  I lived up the road a few miles for a couple years and loved it.  Super close to a lot of my favorite restaurants.  Close to a pretty darn new King Soopers as well as 2 really good sushi places.  Plus it's situated so that it's really easy driving distance to Old Colorado City and Manitou
