Hey ladies! I know you both are in the general area of Roanoke, VA. I am hoping you can offer me some assistance.
My Grandmother lives in Roanoke and has been dealing with cancer and is much less strong than she used to be. She has some family nearby but they wouldn't be of much help in this situation, and I don't want them to get involved, because they wouldn't act as I would want them to.
My Grandmother has decided that it is time to give up her dog. Up until this point she's been able to care for him. However, he isn't trained very well and jumped on her yesterday and broke a few of her ribs. She's decided that it's no longer safe to keep him.
The dog is a 3.5 year old male pug, about 25-30 pounds, named Max.
Mark and I have decided that we cannot bring him home to live with us but I've decided that I will find a place for him to go. I will not take him to a regular shelter, but am open to the idea of a pug rescue or a no-kill shelter.
My parents, Mark, and I are going to be making a trip to Roanoke Jan. 14th, and I'm hoping to have things wrapped up by then. Ideally, I'd like to find somewhere for him to live/go in that area and not have to bring him back to Cincinnati. I can only do so much on the phone/online, so I'm wondering if you have any insight into good resources, or know anyone who has been looking for a dog?
It's been really hard on me to decide not to take him ourselves, but we just can't do it, so I really need to find a good place for him to go.
Re: *Renee and Cassidy*
Yay for Roanoke! I didn't realize you had family here... or maybe I did and I forgot.
FIrst, so sorry that Gma is having a tough time. :-( I hope she beats the cancer and starts feeling better soon! I completely understand that it is too much for her to handle the dog.
We had a foster last year and a friend ended up adopting him. Send me a picture and info and I'll post around Facebook and ask some friends if they know anyone.
Otherwise, the best rescue in Roanoke is Angels of Assisi (you can just google it). THey are amazing.
Off the top of my head Angels of Assisi would be a good place to check with. It's a no kill shelter: http://www.angelsofassisi.org/
I wish we wanted another dog b/c I love pugs! I hope something works out. I'll ask around to see if there are any specific pug rescues.
You may also want to try Midatlantic Pug Rescue. A friend has adopted 3 pugs now through this organization and they are great. Her first two were from a similar situation (man had brain tumor and was no longer safe to be around the dogs).
They do work with untrained dogs and dogs with medical issues. My friend's first 2 dogs were 9+ years old - one was blind and deaf and the other had medical issues as well.
