Chiropractor during Pregnancy?

This is the third morning I've woken up with horrible pain along my spine in my upper back between my shoulder blades.  I'm not sure what I did, but think I may have pulled something when I was attempting to roll over a few nights ago (no small feat these days at almost 36 weeks). It was that or a few days ago I almost slipped on ice and somehow threw my body weight around to keep from falling so I wonder if I did it then.  It's so bad in the morning that I can hardly get out of bed and raising my arms and certain positions are so painful.  Once I get into the shower, the pain subsides and my back loosens up and by the evening I feel fine.   But the pain keeps returning after another night of sleep.

I'm not sure what I can do for the discomfort and I've never been to a chiropractor before.  Do you think this is something they can help with or should I talk to my OB first?  Are there chiropractors who specialize in pregnancy and does anyone have any recommendations?

  • Hey Nichole!  That sounds awful.  The last 4 weeks are so tough...lot of aches and pain, as I remember.  You are so close, though.  I have had a lot of sciatic nerve pain lately, so I'm also considering going to see a chiropractor.  I did Stroller Strides all summer and I really loved the instructor.  She is really knowledgeable about fitness and pregnancy.  Anyway, she sees this chiro and I would totally trust her recommendation.  The web site seems to indicate that they specialize in pregnancy.  I haven't been so I don't have a first hand recommendation, but I'd trust that they are good since my friend says so...

I also went to see Nanna (former Nestie) for massage regularly last pregnancy and she is fabulous.  Hope you feel better!

  • I've been seeing a chiropractor since Sept. I truly believe it's part of what has allowed me to stay feeling good thus far! If you don't go to the one K mentioned above, I'd just ask other chiros if they are comfortable working with pregnant ladies. Mine doesn't specialize, but she does know the webster technique for turning breech babies, etc and has taken really good care of me.

I'd also second what K said about going to get massage. My chiro has massage therapists on staff so that when you get adjusted, you get a 5 minute massage right after to help the muscles stay loose and let the adjustment sink in. Regardless, you should treat yourself to at least a couple of massages this last month! I've been saving mine up at massage envy for this last month!!!! GL!

  • Hi K!!  Thanks for the recommendation.  It's what I get for bragging the day before about how good I was finally feeling and that I wasn't having any of the typical last month aches and pains or other ailments (after being so sick the first 24+ weeks).  But then exactly one month from my due date, I woke up with this back pain and got my first case of heartburn that same night.  Geesh.

Sorry you're having sciatic pain.  I had that earlier on and it was so uncomfortable.  Hopefully you can find some relief either through massage or a chiro. Congrats again on Baby #2 and also on your new home!!

  • Thanks!  2012 should be a good year!  How are you liking the doctors / practice at AWH?  Since we're moving to the east side, I am seeing the Midwives at Rose instead this time.

  • I saw a chiro at Belly Bliss -- I think her name was Jaime -- during pregnancy #2. My OB was aware because DD2 was breech and she had recommended finding a chiro to do the Webster technique to try to get DD2 to flip.

It didn't end up working, but it sure got DD2 moving even though she didn't flip all the way. And I definitely noticed a difference in my comfort level, particularly after the first couple of sessions. I wasn't having pain, but it helped with some of the regular pregnancy discomfort.

I had only been to a chiro once before that.

  • I saw a chiro through both PGs. I saw someone at South Boulder Chiropractic with O Douglas Forstrum (sp?) at Willow Creek Chiro with the twins.  I did the Webster techinique with another chiro down south but am blanking on her name... It helped a lot with the belly pain I was having but didn't get M to turn. I  think he was jammed in there tight with no space, though.
  • I have been to the chiropractor once a month for this whole pg and I really think it has made a huge difference. I had terrible back pain with my last pg. I have still had some this time but not nearly as much. I go to Grady Chiropractic but that is pretty SE. I love them there though and plan to probably get some acupuncture at my next visit to see if it helps things along....if I make it to the 17th, that is.

  • I saw a chiropractor that specialized in pregnant women for the last 10 weeks of my pregnancy and it helped me tremendously. Had insurance not covered it, I would have paid out of pocket, that's how much it helped me. I had terrible sciatic and hip pain that it alleviated and the last two weeks we spent getting my body and the baby ready for birth (properly positioning the baby as well as releasing pelvic ligaments, etc). I honestly attribute my short labor to my chiropractic care (6 hrs of active labor). My OB was perfectly fine with me seeing him throughout my pregnancy as well.
  • I went to a Physical therapist recommended by my OB and it was wonderful.  Best of all, she put me back in place, explained what was going on and then had exercises to keep me in place.
